Chapter 307
by 夏至三候Chapter 307
The Plan Fails
Zheng Jie would never have dreamed that at this point, someone would still dare to target his ammo stash.
His expression was dark as thunder as he snapped at his subordinates, "Haven’t we forced Lu Hang and his men out yet?"
"No. Someone interfered earlier, but our guys were all taken out. We don’t know who did it, but it definitely wasn’t Lu Hang’s group," a subordinate promptly replied.
Zheng Jie paced back and forth in the room, restlessness eating at him.
"Where the fuck did they go?!" Zheng Jie realized that the plan had gone completely sideways from his expectations.
The earlier arrangements had been made precisely to force Lu Hang and his team to show themselves. They couldn’t stomach civilian casualties, which was why he had orchestrated such a full-blown shitstorm—thinking that once they appeared, no matter the cost, they would be trapped in Nan City, unable to return to the capital.
Yet, in the end, no one had shown up. It was as if they had dropped off the fucking grid from Nan City entirely.
Not only Lu Hang and his mission team, but even those who had come from the capital with Lin Kangnian to gawk at the action had disappeared without a trace.
What the hell? With such chaos erupting in Nan City, they were sitting ducks here—they should have had to rely on him. But not a single one had appeared, as if they had never set foot in Nan City at all.
They had clearly been here earlier. He had even had people watching them. But when the chaos broke out, these individuals had fled alongside the civilians, with no one seeking him out.
He had originally planned to detain them when they came to him willingly, using them as leverage against Lin Kangnian. After all, their identities were all significant—if anything happened to them, Lin Kangnian wouldn’t be able to bear the consequences. That would have given them an extra layer of security for their escape.
But none of them had shown up.
Every part of the plan had fallen apart, leaving Zheng Jie seeing red.
"We should arrange for people to leave first!" Zheng Jun, seeing Zheng Jie’s plans collapse, felt a bad feeling in his gut. Delaying any further would only leave them in a passive position, making escape impossible.
Zheng Jie shot him a murderous look and gritted his teeth. "How can we leave when we don’t even know where Lu Hang and his men are hiding? If those motherfuckers intercept us, who could possibly get away?"
This was precisely why he had hesitated to act.
"Then we leave in batches!" Zheng Jun was far more decisive than Zheng Jie and had no intention of delaying any longer.
Zhou Ling, standing nearby, nodded in agreement. "We can leave in groups, disguising ourselves. Given the earlier chaos, blending in with panicked civilians would work!"
Zheng Jie's gut told him that they wouldn’t be able to escape like this, but he overlooked one thing—the chaos in the city hadn’t just frightened the civilians. It had also terrified the other Zheng family members who had come from the capital.
Among them, apart from Zheng Jun, almost none had ever been to Nan City before. They had heard that Nan City was a shithole where people got whacked daily. The earlier bombings had left them shaking in their boots, terrified that explosives might land right on their heads. Overcome with panic, they were desperate to leave and had already begun causing a commotion.
These were selfish people, incapable of thinking ahead. All they cared about was saving their own skins and getting out of this dangerous place as soon as possible.
No matter how many ideas or plans Zheng Jie had, he couldn’t overpower their demands. Among them, a child was crying incessantly, grating on Zheng Jie’s nerves so badly that he almost wanted to put a bullet in them.
In the end, Zheng Jie was backed into a corner and had no choice but to relent.
After discussion, it was decided that Zheng Jun would leave first with one group, while Zheng Jie would cover their six.
With their large numbers and enough firepower here, Zheng Jie wasn’t worried that splitting up would weaken them. Besides, dispersing was still better than getting smoked in one go.
