    Chapter 30

    A Fishy Past

"Nan Nan, what’s this you’re planting?" Zhang Xiaofeng asked as she approached.

Lin Nannan paused, realizing that the local rice required transplanting seedlings, while her method involved direct seeding. "I’m not sure," she replied vaguely. "Someone gave them to me."

She feared that if she explained too clearly, everyone might start demanding seeds from her—and she wouldn’t be able to produce more. So, she decided to shut it down early.

"Someone gave them to you?" Zhang Xiaofeng eyed the rather mediocre seeds in Lin Nannan’s hand with frustration. "Are you sure these will even grow?"

Lin Nannan shook her head. "I’m not sure, but that’s what they told me."

Zhang Xiaofeng was annoyed, but seeing that Lin Nannan had no intention of stopping, she remembered her mother-in-law’s words and held back from interfering further.

Still, she couldn’t help worrying about the harvest from these two acres.

Lin Nannan didn’t care even if she knew. After all, the yield from these two acres would easily surpass that of four acres, so she wasn’t worried about failing to deliver.

It could be said that Lin Nannan’s planting speed was the fastest in the entire village, making many envious. The Lins couldn’t resist any longer and sent Lin Qingqing to probe her.

After several busy days, everything was finally done—the seeds were planted. Just as Lin Nannan was about to help the Lu family with their plowing, Lin Qingqing stopped her.

Lin Nannan knew Lin Qingqing well enough to understand that she wouldn’t approach without a reason. She stared her down, waiting for her to speak.

Under her indifferent gaze, Lin Qingqing inexplicably got goosebumps.

Shifting uneasily, she said, "Nan Nan, my dad isn’t feeling well, and Grandma is too old. Our fields still haven’t been planted. Grandma wants you to come help—"

"No." Lin Nannan’s reply was flat.

Lin Qingqing snapped, "How can you be like this? You’re strong and capable, yet you lazed around at home and refused to work the fields. Now that our land is behind schedule, how can you just stand by and not help?"

Lin Nannan wasn’t about to accept such guilt-tripping. She sneered, "As I recall, it was made very clear—I married Lu Hang in your place, and that cut all ties with the Lins. What’s the meaning of you making demands now?"

Lin Qingqing, who had long prepared an excuse, bristled and argued, "Family doesn’t keep score! Besides, wasn’t this marriage good for you? The Lus treat you so well—how can you be so ungrateful?"

"Who said we’re family?" Lin Nannan remained unmoved. "Whatever you think, I don’t care. If you expect me to plant your fields for you, in your dreams!"

"Lin Nannan!" Lin Qingqing gritted her teeth in fury. "Got no shame? Did the Lins raise you for nothing? If not for Grandma, you’d have died long ago!"

At this, Lin Nannan’s gaze sharpened. Having inherited the original host’s memories, she had pieced together some overlooked details and sensed something amiss. Testing the waters, she said, "Was it really your grandma who saved me? Lin Qingqing, go back and tell her—Heaven sees everything!"

Lin Qingqing didn’t know the specifics of Lin Nannan’s origins, but she had overheard enough to know that Lin Nannan wasn’t simply picked up by her grandmother—someone had delivered her. Hearing Lin Nannan’s words now, she assumed Lin Nannan had uncovered something. Too spooked to push her luck, she turned and fled.

Her reaction all but admitted it, making Lin Nannan mull over the original’s origins...

As for whether she cared about reconnecting with any biological family—well, she wasn’t the real deal anyway.
