Chapter 74
by 夏至三候Chapter 74
Her Mission
If such seeds existed, they would have already been world-famous, not just confined to their village.
Lin Nannan guarded these seeds more fiercely than anyone else, showing how precious they were. It was evident that the seeds were scarce, but Lu Hang was puzzled—if they could yield such abundant harvests, why were there so few? Where did these seeds come from, and why had they remained obscure until now...
Lu Hang’s gears were turning in his mind as he watched Lin Nannan holding forth confidently with Lu Yuan. He felt that certain matters needed thorough investigation...
He wasn’t doubting Lin Nannan, but he wanted to uncover the true identities of the powerful figures buried in the back mountain.
He even considered asking Lin Nannan directly—how much did she really know about these seeds?
Or whether she knew their origins, so they could obtain more...
The unspoken intensity in his eyes was unmistakable, making it impossible for Lin Nannan to ignore. Yet she couldn’t comprehend the meaning behind his look. Did he think she was wrong?
“These seeds are of utmost importance, Nan Nan. I’m afraid we won’t be able to keep them,” Lu Hang said solemnly, looking at her.
“They’re mine!” Lin Nannan bristled like a hedgehog, prickling with defiance and anger as she glared at Lu Hang.
Lu Hang let out a weary sigh. “I know, but these seeds are too revolutionary. If they remain in the village, I can tell you with certainty—they won’t stay here for long.”
Before, he hadn’t seen them for himself and assumed the praise was exaggerated. But now, witnessing their miraculous yield, defying nature itself, he realized the truth.
So, the pretext wasn’t just an excuse—it was a necessity.
“Why?” Lin Nannan didn’t understand.
Why should her belongings be given to others?
“If we don’t report them, after the harvest, hordes of people will come demanding the seeds. Strangers, we can refuse. But what about kin and neighbors? Just within the village, our Lu family members alone would find it hard to turn them down. If you give to one but not another, it’ll stir endless trouble. Unless you hide these seeds away and never plant them again.” He laid out the harsh reality helplessly, leaving the choice to her.
“If we report them, I’ll handle the arrangements. Officials will come to collect them, but at least some will be set aside for our household…” This meant Lin Nannan would still retain some seeds.
Lin Nannan’s face darkened. Seething silently before, she asked bitterly, “If I refuse, will they try to take them by force?”
She could pummel them into the ground!
She didn’t say it aloud, but Lu Hang could guess her thoughts. He replied wearily, “You might be strong—you can fight off anyone. But you must understand how terrifying human nature can be. Out of envy or rage, someone might destroy the crops. Even if you kill them afterward, it won’t undo the damage. Is that what you want?”
Lu Yuan and Lu Ming exchanged glances, their eyes wide with shock, not daring to utter a word.
They feared getting caught in the crossfire when gods quarrel, mortals suffer.
The aura between their eldest brother and sister-in-law was intimidating, making them tremble inwardly.
Lin Nannan clenched and unclenched her fists, realizing Lu Hang spoke the truth.
She could guard the fields day and night, but against overwhelming numbers, if all her crops were destroyed, she’d be heartbroken.
But how could she obtain more seeds...
Time was running out!
“Nan Nan, I know you want to fulfill your predecessors’ wishes—to let these seeds realize their true value. Only by placing them where they truly belong can they reach their full potential, alleviate the country’s hunger, and let them rest in peace. Isn’t that right?” Lu Hang knew Lin Nannan was intelligent, so he appealed to her conscience, helping her grasp the bigger picture.
And in doing so, he was also shielding her from harm.
The cruelty of human nature was something she couldn't handle.
Now that he was barely holding on himself, he had to prioritize her and must never let her be in danger.
Lin Nannan's mind wandered to distant galaxies because of his words, thinking of how their ancestors had poured their hearts into these crops, only to end up with nothing planted and countless seeds destroyed, leaving behind just a handful...
This trip of hers was an all-or-nothing gamble, and no one knew she would come here.
Looking at the swaying seedlings before her, her chest felt tight...
Was her coming here just a coincidence?
Was there someone who wanted her to come here, hoping she could change the food shortage problem here...
Lin Nannan's thoughts were a tangled mess, but she didn't make any promises lightly—this was far too important to her.
Just as the tension was weighing heavily on Lu Ming and his sister, the sound of commotion nearby caught their attention. All four of them knew this serious topic couldn't be brought up again.
As long as they didn’t mention it, the atmosphere immediately lightened, and both Lu Ming and Lu Yuan finally breathed easier...
"Sister-in-law, are these the only seeds?" Lu Yuan asked curiously.
Lin Nannan looked at her, somewhat puzzled.
Lu Yuan ticked off on her fingers and said, "Like sweet potatoes—originally, the harvest was decent, but if we replaced them with these seeds, wouldn’t the yield be thousands of pounds? And then there are potatoes, corn, and the like..."
She spoke without thinking, but Lu Hang and the others held their breath, their eyes all fixed on Lin Nannan. Lin Nannan caught her breath for a moment before instinctively saying, "There are some other seeds, but I don’t know what they are!"
"These seeds have been specially treated—only I can plant them!" Before Lu Hang could speak, Lin Nannan headed him off.
She wasn’t sure if all the seeds would work, so she would plant them herself. If all else failed, she could still use the repair serum as a last resort, even though it would reduce Lu Hang’s chances of recovery. But she had no other choice.
She couldn’t forget the mission that brought her here.
Lu Hang knew she was wary of him and smiled bitterly. "I won’t ask about the seeds in your hands, but after this harvest, I hope you’ll listen to me."
Lin Nannan stomped the ground angrily. Her strength was immense, and her emotions were unstable—soon, she had dug a large pit in front of her, making Lu Yuan’s eyes widen in alarm that her sister-in-law would be scolded later.
Those were good shoes getting wrecked.
Knowing she was unwilling, Lu Hang let it drop. He believed she would realize which choice was best for her.
Before they could settle their own matters, the Lu clan and the villagers arrived.
Lin Nannan glanced around and saw that everyone wore smiles—clearly, the Lu clan had come out on top.
"Just take a look, but don’t hound me—I can’t help. These seeds aren’t ours to decide!" Zhang Xiaofeng explained seriously as soon as she reached the field, afraid everyone would beg her for seeds. Even if she gave her life, she couldn’t provide them.
Crops this good would make any farmer's mouth water. Asking them to give up was truly difficult. Someone whispered, "When sowing season comes, can our village be the first to sow?"
"That’s right, A Hang, Village Chief, when they come to collect the seeds, you should mention it!" The suggestion was met with a chorus of approval.
"Friends and neighbors..." Lu Hang spoke up, drawing everyone’s attention. "All the seeds are here, but there are no guarantees. You wouldn’t want us to make promises we can't deliver on, would you?"
