    Chapter 89

    The Money Crisis

Lin Nannan woke up only to be told that they couldn’t return the next day because they couldn’t get sleeper tickets.

Others could manage, but Lu Hang couldn’t, so Lu Fang didn’t buy the tickets.

"If there aren’t any, we’ll just stay an extra day!" Zhang Xiaofeng said, though she hated spending the extra money.

Lin Nannan never gave money a second thought. After all, she had been well taken care of in the Lu family and never needed to spend a dime. Plus, everything she had was provided for her, so she never paid attention to finances.

As for the hundred yuan she had squeezed out of the Lin family, she had done so purely because she knew from the original owner’s memories how much the Lin family valued that betrothal gift.

Now, seeing her mother-in-law’s pained yet helpless expression, she felt a twinge of guilt. After they returned to the guesthouse, she leaned close to Lu Hang and whispered, "Are Mom and Dad running short on money?"

Lu Hang looked at the girl before him, whose eyes flickered with worry. His reassurance came out as a sigh. "Yes. We need to buy quite a bit of medicine this time, so every extra bit we spend weighs on Mom."

Lin Nannan was surprised. "I heard people in the village say our family is one of the best-off families in the area?"

Since coming here, she hadn’t spent a single cent and had no real concept of money. Her mind was always focused on the fields, so she never paid attention to finances.

But she was aware of the villagers’ gossip about the Lu family—full of jealousy, especially about her new clothes, which had caused quite a stir.

Her words startled Lu Hang. He turned his head to look at the girl beside him. "Who told you that?"

"Isn’t it true?" Lin Nannan murmured. "Then why was the family able to make me several sets of new clothes?"

Realizing she had believed the villagers’ nonsense simply because of those two outfits, Lu Hang couldn’t help but laugh.

His little girl was bold when she needed to be, but sometimes, she could be downright clueless…

"Your new clothes were made from scraps of fabric we’d saved. Mom just bought a little extra to supplement it, so it didn’t cost much," Lu Hang explained. "Before I was injured, our family’s situation was decent. I had a salary and bonuses, and with Dad and second uncle doing odd jobs, we at least had enough for food and daily needs."

"But after I got hurt, the initial treatment costs didn’t come from the family’s savings. Still, my injuries were severe, and the expenses piled up. On top of that, Dad and second uncle stopped working to take care of me, so money got tighter…"

"Not just tighter—it disappeared completely," Lin Nannan said gloomily.

With Lu Hang no longer earning and the rest of the family also without income, they were essentially burning through their savings.

Her bluntness caught Lu Hang off guard. He couldn’t resist rubbing his chin against her forehead, leaving Lin Nannan momentarily stunned. Then, finding it amusing, she pressed closer, making Lu Hang equal parts amused and resigned.

"So, the family really is strapped—they didn’t even use my hundred yuan!" Lin Nannan muttered against him. After arriving at the hospital, she had realized how much everything cost—transportation, food, lodging. Hearing her mother-in-law fret over the expenses had made it clear just how strapped they were.

"My situation won’t change anything. After this batch of medicine, we won’t need to buy more. Once the harvest comes in, we won’t be hurting for cash. Don’t worry," Lu Hang reassured her.

Lu Hang’s mention of stopping medication didn’t bother Lin Nannan—she had the Healing Solution to fall back on. But the moment she heard they might have to sell grain, she dug in her heels.
