Chapter 194

Chapter 194

Prelude

"This way!" Hearing the gunshots, Lin Nannan led Lu Hang and his men to rescue Zhang Shengguo and his group. Still, they were badly wounded.

Their arrival caused the enemy—who had already suffered heavy losses—to start thinking about retreating. But for Lu Hang and his team, this location was a secret, so they absolutely could not allow anyone to escape, to avoid future problems.

"Send them to the hospital," Lin Nannan and Lu Hang were on the same page. After making arrangements, the two chased after the people running for their lives…

Lin Nannan’s hearing was sharper than most. In the mountains, the sounds made by fleeing individuals were much louder than cautious footsteps, so tracking them posed no difficulty. However, the enemies’ familiarity with the terrain had them worried—they didn’t know how long these people had been operating there or what their purpose was. Were they targeting them specifically, or had they simply coincidentally encountered Zhang Shengguo’s group?

Once they found them, their shooting skills meant no one got away—only whether they lived or died mattered.

Working in perfect sync, they took a few prisoners and eliminated the rest before calling in a team to handle the aftermath. Then, they headed straight to the hospital…

With so much coming and going in the village, and many tasks requiring transport, the village had a vehicle ready for emergencies.

After delivering the wounded to the hospital, one vehicle remained, which made things easier for Lu Hang and his team to travel.

When they arrived at the hospital, they went directly to the emergency room, where they indeed saw familiar faces.

"How are they?" the two asked as they approached.

A Da and A Zhang were among those present. Since they hadn't moved from their position guarding the Lu family's compound, they had come to the hospital with the injured and provided crucial help.

The person speaking to Lu Hang now was Chang Yuan, a young man close to Commander Zhang, his face grim.

"They're in surgery—we still don't know their condition!" he said grimly.

Lu Hang patted his shoulder and asked, "What exactly happened? Why did Commander Zhang go into the mountains?"

He realized that if Zhang Shengguo and his men hadn’t gone that far in, they probably wouldn’t have clashed with these people. He just couldn’t figure out why Zhang had gone in…

Chang Yuan quickly explained, "Since construction of the research facility began, Commander Zhang became completely focused on it. He understood its importance, so when he learned about earlier threats in the mountains, he led teams to clear the area and ensure safety around the perimeter. There were no problems during previous inspections. But yesterday, the commander came back saying something felt off, so today he brought more men with him—only for this to happen!"

His frown deepened. He couldn’t understand what was so alluring about the mountains that kept drawing people in.

They had assumed that once they dealt with the previous intruders, no more would appear. Yet here they were again—and judging by their equipment, they were well-armed…

As if reading his thoughts, Lin Nannan spoke up, "Commander Zhang let his guard down. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have engaged them head-on…" What she didn’t say was that Zhang Shengguo had known she had superior weapons available but hadn’t taken them seriously. If they’d used her firearms, even if injured, they might have turned the fight around instead of ending up sending people to the emergency room.

And if the gunfire hadn’t drawn their attention, the outcome could have been far worse.
