"It’s fine, we can just eat something light!" Lin Nannan replied casually, recalling how they had scrounged up good meals wherever they could and even hunted for extra meat along the way.

"Won’t they think we’re skimping?" Granny Lu fretted.

Realizing her concern about borrowing meat or eggs from the villagers, Lin Nannan quickly reassured her, "There’s food in the car—I’ll grab it!"

"How can we let you do that?" Granny Lu protested.

"It’s ours, plain and simple. Grandma, trust me, let’s just prepare the meal first..." Knowing Nan Nan couldn’t handle hunger, Granny Lu decided to follow her suggestion to avoid starving her.

While the Lu men helped the outsiders carry things inside, the women began washing vegetables and cutting meat to cook. Lin Nannan sorted through her own stuff among the belongings they had brought back—she had no idea how to arrange the rest.

With so many gifts piled all jumbled up, she decided to leave the organizing to her mother-in-law once things settled down, so the family could distribute them properly.

The advantage of having many hands was that work flew by. By the time the men finished moving everything, the women had already prepared the meal after a brief rest. The group, now gotten chummy with Lu Hang, ate heartily without standing on ceremony before being settled into the hillside quarters.

"If you ever get a craving, just tell me, and I’ll make it for you!" Ma Amin made sure to say to Lin Nannan before leaving.

Without hesitation, Lin Nannan nodded. "Alright, I’ll come find you on the hill later!"

After everyone had left, Lu Yuan asked curiously, "Sis, who was that?"

"He’s the cook they assigned us. His skills are amazing—he can make all kinds of dishes!" Lin Nannan boasted like a kid showing off, making the rest of the Lu family chuckle. No one asked about the outcome of their trip to the capital.

Only after Lin Nannan went to bathe did Zhang Xiaofeng quietly inquire. Lu Hang quickly summarized the Lin family’s situation, and upon learning the full story, everyone was furious, nearly ready to skin Old Mrs. Lin alive.

"That damned old woman! How dare she claim she saved Nan Nan? Where does she get the nerve?!" Granny Lu couldn’t hold back her anger, wishing she could give the woman a beating if she were present.

Back then, Old Mrs. Lin had been praised for bringing Lin Nannan home, but in truth, she’d committed a crime.
