Chapter 109
by 夏至三候Chapter 109
Just Playing Around
"What do you want these for?" Zhang Shengguo asked, puzzled.
"Just playing around, to see if I can assemble one!" Lin Nannan replied honestly.
Even Lu Hang, who was already accustomed to his wife's remarkable nature, exchanged a look of disbelief with Zhang Shengguo, finding it hard to believe.
"You know how to assemble one?" Lu Hang asked, his voice thick with disbelief.
He just wanted to know—was there anything his wife couldn’t do?
His overly serious tone made Lin Nannan hesitate slightly. After a moment of consideration, she said, "I do know how, but I’m not sure if I can make it work."
She could assemble things hundreds of times more advanced than that, but she wasn’t certain about this era’s technology.
Zhang Shengguo was genuinely intrigued by her. Thinking of the wheelchair, his gaze sharpened as he said, "If it’s just defective parts, I might be able to arrange something. Since they’re unusable, the restrictions wouldn’t be as strict."
"Commander?" Lu Hang exclaimed in surprise, not understanding why he would say that.
Even if the items were unusable, the military had clear regulations—they weren’t for just anyone to take.
Zhang Shengguo gestured at him and said to Lin Nannan, "You’re heading back today, so it might be too late. I’ll deliver them to you myself next time. Is that alright?"
"Alright!" Lin Nannan nodded.
Zhang Shengguo had something to discuss with Lu Hang, so he sent Lin Nannan ahead to reassure the Lu family while he saw Lu Hang off separately.
Only after receiving Lu Hang’s nod did Lin Nannan turn and leave.
"Commander," Lu Hang began, but Zhang Shengguo interrupted.
"Lu Hang, I know what you want to say. But your wife is remarkably skilled. Just take that wheelchair, for example—it’s already eye-catching. If she can actually make something out of defective parts, do you realize what that would mean?" he asked earnestly.
Had he not seen the wheelchair, he might not have considered it. But now, with the country lagging behind in every aspect and suffering for it, he didn’t want to miss any opportunity—especially if Lin Nannan could truly turn scrap into gold. The amount of waste she could save the nation was incalculable.
God knew how painful it was to see damaged guns go to waste.
Lu Hang tried to object but couldn’t find the words.
He didn’t want Lin Nannan exposed to danger.
But when it came to her abilities, he and the commander shared the same thought—if it benefited the country, they had to try.
"Commander," he said quietly after calming down, "I don’t want her in danger."
Thinking of his situation, Zhang Shengguo sighed. "I understand. This time, we won’t give those opportunists any chance."
Lu Hang knew he couldn’t keep Lin Nannan grounded forever. She was like a phoenix ready to soar—no one could dim her light.
A single village couldn’t contain her.
Taking a deep breath, he clenched his jaw and said, "This is actually secondary. She’s not even sure herself. But there’s something else in her possession that I think you should report to higher-ups. Someone needs to come to our home as soon as possible."
"What is it?" Zhang Shengguo asked curiously.
"The seeds my wife has—they produce double or triple the yield, with a shorter time to harvest. I’m afraid if too many people find out, it’d all be taken from us." Originally, he had planned to wait until after the harvest to mention it. But after the incident at the train station, where so many witnessed the extraordinary nature of his wheelchair—people who wouldn’t be so easily fooled—they would inevitably trace it back to Lin Nannan. They might even discover the unusually productive harvests in the village. So, he decided to speak up early.
Zhang Shengguo looked astonished and said in disbelief, "Are you serious?"
"Yeah, I saw it with my own eyes. The old-timers in the village all know and are dead certain that Lin Nannan's crops will yield a bumper harvest. As for the exact amount, we’ll need specialists to check."
Lu Hang told Zhang Shengguo this because he knew Zhang had backing from powerful people, which was why he spoke so plainly.
Zhang Shengguo also understood that if what Lu Hang said was true, it would be of immense significance to the nation, so much so that his breathing even grew uneven.
"Lu Hang, if nothing else, no one will dare to bully your wife," he assured. "I’ll go back and get the right folks involved. No matter what, we must protect those crops, understand?"
"Yeah, the villagers know about it. I’ve also promised them that if this really works, our village will be the first to benefit. So they’re more anxious than anyone. There won’t be any issues in the short term, but over time, money can tempt people—you know how it is."
"I understand. I’ll have someone take you over first!" Zhang Shengguo quickly made arrangements for Lu Hang to be escorted to his family, while he himself left the train station directly...
...
The Lu family let out a sigh of relief when they saw that both Lin Nannan and Lu Hang were unharmed.
Once safely on the train, Zhang Xiaofeng pressed a hand to her chest and said, "The outside world is too dangerous. We should travel less in the future."
This incident had truly rattled her.
"Exactly. Everything’s peaceful at home, but as soon as you step out, anything can happen," Lu Fang added, still rattled as he sat close to Zhang Xiaofeng.
Seeing the guilt in Lu Hang’s eyes, Lin Nannan patted his shoulder and then comforted Old Man and Old Lady Lu with a smile, "Mom, Dad, those thugs have been caught. It’ll be safe from now on. We can’t let people like them stop us from traveling for the rest of our lives!"
"Sister-in-law is right. Heh, but honestly, it was pretty wild. It’s the first time I’ve experienced something like this—what a rush!" Lu Ming grew excited as he recalled the situation.
Every boy dreams of being a hero.
"You were a mess!" Lin Nannan said disdainfully. "Boys need to protect themselves outside too. Since you’re not in school right now, have your brother teach you how to fight back. Otherwise, you’ll end up crying and running home for help if someone bullies you."
"When did I cry?" Lu Ming bristled at his sister-in-law’s words.
He had been scared, but with his uncle holding the line, though his legs had trembled, he definitely hadn’t cried...
"Legs weak!" Lin Nannan called him out, making Lu Ming’s expression change instantly.
"How did you know?" he asked in disbelief.
He had been standing in front—shouldn’t people have seen his brave front? Why was his sister-in-law’s focus so different from everyone else’s?
"It was obvious!" Lu Hang said with disdain. "A Ming, your sister-in-law is right. You really should train harder so you can protect the family in the future."
"Right, right! More practice. I think A Yuan should learn too, so she doesn’t get pushed around later," Lu Fang chimed in.
He had realized by now that being skilled not only prevents bullying but can also save lives—so he even included his daughter in the plan.
"And Qian Qian," Zhang Xiaofeng reminded. "Otherwise, Nannan’ll have to bail her out again."
