    Chapter 52

    Lu Hang’s Concerns

If Lin Nannan's abilities were truly taught by those elders, the consequences would be serious.

How those elders died was obvious—no need to even think about it. If the higher-ups were to find out, the fallout would be unimaginable.

But if he were to say nothing at all, he truly couldn’t do it.

Lin Nannan’s skills could change so many things...

"What are you thinking about?" Seeing his serious expression, Lin Nannan leaned in closer, asking curiously.

Until now, he had been lying in bed, looking up at this woman. This was the first time he could gaze down at her, noticing how much paler her skin had gotten, how much brighter her eyes were. Compared to when she first arrived, she had changed significantly, seeming even more spirited now.

Lu Hang still had some strength in his hands. He raised one to tuck away a loose strand of her hair, then smiled and said, "I was thinking about how amazing Nan Nan is, and why the wheelchair she made is so good!"

The compliment made Lin Nannan grin, her pride instantly showing.

Her playful look drew an involuntary chuckle from Lu Hang.

One bending down, the other looking down—they gazed at each other, smiling as if there was no one else in their world. The sight of it thrilled Lu Yuan so much she nearly shook her mother’s arm loose.

The other adults in the Lu family couldn’t help but smile too, for it had been so long since they had seen Lu Hang this happy.

At this moment, Lu Hang’s smile was not put on for show, but completely genuine.

Zhang Xiaofeng and Old Mrs. Lu fought back tears. They bit back their emotions, turning away several times to wipe their eyes before steadying themselves.

"Nan Nan, do you want to farm the land, or do you want to leave this place?" After a moment, Lu Hang looked at the young woman following him step by step and asked.

Lin Nannan’s face darkened at once. "What do you mean? Are you trying to kick me out?"

Her sharp tone immediately alarmed Zhang Xiaofeng.

Tensing at her words, Zhang Xiaofeng knew the issue stemmed from her son. Her face hardened as she scolded, "A-Hang, don’t you dare be so heartless! Nan Nan has treated you so well, putting in all this effort. How could you even think of sending her away?"

Zhang Xiaofeng, who had never before reprimanded her son, feared he might act impulsively and regret sending Nan Nan away later. So she immediately stood up for Lin Nannan.

Faced with his family’s disapproving looks, Lu Hang was caught between amusement and exasperation.

He realized that, without him noticing, his wife had won over everyone in the household, making him seem like the outsider. It left him feeling somewhat awkward.

"Mom, if Nan Nan misunderstands me, fine. But you too? Am I really your own son?" he couldn’t help but ask.

"Then what did you mean by that?" Zhang Xiaofeng pressed.

Lu Hang glanced around at everyone and said seriously, "If word gets out about Nan Nan’s wheelchair, what do you think will happen?"

At the thought of a voice-controlled wheelchair, the Lu family fell silent, faces grim.

They were on good terms with the villagers, so secrecy would be impossible. Yet, this matter absolutely had to be concealed.

"Nan Nan," Zhang Xiaofeng said solemnly, "I had no idea you were so talented. If you want to stay here, you’ll have to hide what you can do. Or we won’t be able to protect you."

If the right people noticed Nan Nan’s gifts, it might be a good thing. But what scared them was drawing dangerous eyes. That wouldn’t just be bad; it could put Nan Nan in danger.

They’d already run into someone like Han Li in the village, living undercover. Who knew if there were others like him around? If another such person appeared and leaked Nan Nan’s abilities, who knew what might happen?
