    Chapter 270

    Wife

"Hey there, little lady, all by yourself?" One of them swaggered up, leering at Lin Nannan shamelessly. Upon noticing her good looks, his eyes instantly lit up.

The look made Lin Nannan’s skin crawl. Her eyes narrowed—then she lashed out without warning, showing no intention of reasoning with them.

Assuming the trouble was caused by her coming and going alone during the day, she decided to make an example of them to deter future harassment. Her kick was brutal—the first guy dropped like a sack of potatoes, out cold, without even a whimper.

The racket jolted the neighbors awake, but few dared to peek or interfere.

Meanwhile, Lu Hang, who had just returned to his room to sleep, widened his eyes at the sound of the angry shouts.

That voice—his wife’s? Was he hallucinating?

No way. Even if his wife wanted to find him, she wouldn’t be able to make it to Nanshi. No one would let her come here. This was a setup. They’d failed to track him down, so they were using a voice similar to his wife’s to lure him out...

The more he thought about it, the more convinced he became. He stayed hidden and didn’t investigate.

But as the familiar, domineering voice continued, accompanied by cries of pain, Lu Hang’s eyes widened further. Even if someone could mimic her voice, no one could fake that trademark swagger of hers. Though he still doubted, he got up.

What if it really was his wife?

But with so many people guarding her at home, who would dare let her leave?

Besides, his mission was classified, and this rented place was temporary. How could she have found him and ended up right next door...

Head spinning, he crept into the courtyard and moved closer to the wall. Through a crack, he spotted her—standing there like she ruled the damn yard—and his blood ran cold.

Even though he couldn’t see clearly, he couldn’t be mistaken. That was his wife. He’d know her in the dark with his eyes closed.

    So why was she here?

If these thugs were here because of him, Lu Hang stayed hidden. Knowing his wife could handle it, he didn’t want to reveal himself and risk dragging her into danger in front of those people.

Lin Nannan, meanwhile, shot a sidelong glance at the wall, assuming it was just some timid onlooker, and paid no further attention. Instead, she eyed the groaning men on the ground. A wicked grin spread across her face as an idea struck. She pointed at the one with a broken leg and demanded, "You trashed my place. Cough up the cash. Hand over all the money you’ve got."

These men clearly weren’t good people, so Lin Nannan felt no guilt robbing them.

"It’s all a misunderstanding!" the man with the broken leg hastily explained. "We saw a shadow on your wall and thought it was a thief. That’s why we climbed in—we weren’t targeting you!"

Recalling the earlier disturbance, Lin Nannan knew there was some truth to his words—they hadn’t come for her initially. But they hadn’t planned to let her go either. She sneered. "I’m not stupid. Don’t play dumb. Hand it over, or I’ll put you to sleep. But I can’t guarantee how hard I’ll hit—you’ve seen how strong I am."

Remembering how their companion had been knocked out with a single punch and how his own leg was broken and his arm useless, the conscious men didn’t dare argue. They quickly rummaged through their unconscious comrades’ pockets, handing over everything, including their own money. To prove their sincerity, they even turned their pockets inside out to show they weren’t hiding anything.

The cash lay scattered, dead still in the windless dark.

Lin Nannan’s lips curled. A sudden idea struck her—this might be the fastest way to make money.

Turning these punks in might even net a bounty if handed over to the police.

As for the money she’d just taken—who would know? Plausible deniability—who could prove otherwise? After all, they were the ones who’d broken in.

With that thought, she gathered the money from the ground and clenched it in her hand. She then ducked inside to scrounge up rope, planning to tie them up and have someone report them to the authorities.

But the earlier commotion had attracted the men lurking at the corner. Seeing their own people beaten, they initially wanted to help—until they saw how terrifying the woman was. Too scared to move, they lurked until she was gone before rushing in, slipping in to drag their buddies off, dead silent.

By the time Lin Nannan returned with a few dirty ropes, only a whirl of leaves remained in the deserted yard. The groaning men had vanished—like ghosts. Her face went sheet-white as she stood rooted, gut-punched by disbelief.

"Good thing I got the money, or all that work would’ve been for nothing!" she murmured, shut the door and turned to rest when she heard a familiar voice.

    "Nan Nan!"

Lin Nannan narrowed her eyes. "Who is it?"

"It's me, Lu Hang!" He identified himself and hopped the fence, worried his wife might kick him and make his injuries worse before he could even explain.

"Lu Hang?" Lin Nannan rushed over, staring at the man in disbelief. "Where did you come from?"

She had planned to search for him at dawn, yet here he was, showing up out of nowhere—completely baffling.

"I live next door!" Lu Hang pointed behind him.

Lin Nannan studied him, then asked, "So you were the one sneaking over earlier?"

"Yeah." He didn’t dare lie to his wife.

"Why were you climbing walls in the middle of the night?" she asked, exasperated.

Lu Hang, worried they’d be overheard, whispered, "Let’s talk inside!"

Knowing he was on a mission, Lin Nannan nodded immediately, grabbing his hand as they hurried inside...

Under the light, she saw Lu Hang looked pale and worn out. Squinting, she asked, "Are you hurt?"

Otherwise, with his skills, he wouldn’t have needed to sneak over in the dead of night.

"Sharp as ever," Lu Hang admitted with a bitter smile. "Not just hurt—it got infected. I was being tailed, tried to grab meds, but just tipped them off."

Lin Nannan didn’t need him to spell it out.

"What’s going on? Weren’t you with Zhang Shengguo? Where is he?" she pressed.

Lu Hang’s tone turned grim. "We got split up. No clue where he is now. And I think someone’s onto us—I can barely take a step without trouble."

Lin Nannan narrowed her eyes. "Still the work of those behind this?"

    "Yeah." Lu Hang nodded.

"This whole mess is ridiculous!" Lin Nannan said, frustrated.

Lu Hang nodded in agreement, then frowned at his displeased wife. "How did you even end up here?"
