Chapter 482
by 夏至三候Chapter 482
Unknown Injuries
Without pedestrians, Lin Nannan and A Da stood out badly, especially as they neared the hospital where there was no cover at all.
"Hurry up! They can't run anymore. The good life is right before our eyes. Once we catch Lin Nannan, we’ll live the high life and never have to suffer like this again." Those on the verge of giving up were spurred on by this thought, revitalized by the hope that seemed within reach—all they had to do was catch her.
But their fantasy was shattered when, just as they were about to seize Lin Nannan, a group of people suddenly appeared before them, all aiming guns at them, leaving everyone stunned.
"You finally made it!" Lin Nannan gasped, looking at the newcomers.
"Apologies, rounding up men takes time!" Zhang Shengshi spoke up under everyone’s incredulous gaze.
"Perfect timing. All these people were involved in this. Make sure to get everything out of them!" she reminded him.
Zhang Shengshi nodded. "Understood. You should go now. Old Man Lin’s hurt bad."
Lin Nannan nodded and left without looking back.
Zhang Shengshi took his eyes off Lin Nannan, looked at the surrendering individuals, waved his hand, and ordered his men to quickly take them away to avoid trouble.
Before he could finish, Zhang Shengguo arrived. "Brother, how is Lin Nannan?"
"She’s fine. She’s already inside the hospital!" Zhang Shengshi replied, patting the shoulder of one of the detained criminals. "We’ve finally caught them. We should get the information as soon as possible. If you’re free, join us!"
Normally, it wouldn’t be Zhang Shengguo’s turn to handle this, but given the fishy business behind the incident, they had to take matters into their own hands.
"I’ll go to the hospital to check. Dad said Elder Lin is critically injured and might not make it. Since Lu Hang isn’t here, I’ll go help!" Zhang Shengguo said.
Zhang Shengshi nodded. Seeing that the captives were securely bound, he waved his hand and had them escorted away.
Unaware of what happened next, Lin Nannan, after ensuring the captives were caught, rushed into the hospital with A Da and headed straight for the emergency room...
Outside the emergency room, the three Lin brothers stood looking grim. Lin Kangsheng’s hand was dripping blood, his wound untreated as he stood there. The other two were no better, their faces equally pale...
"How are they?" Lin Nannan asked.
Lin Kangnian’s eyes reddened as he replied, "Grandfather was shot. The bullet’s in a bad position. We’re not sure about Dad’s condition—we weren’t together when it happened. But according to the doctors, he's not doing well either..."
Lin Nannan understood and pressed her lips together, staring at the emergency room door. "Didn’t they have the medicine with them? Did they take it after the incident?"
"Grandfather took it, but his condition is still critical. He’s old, and the doctors said there are too many uncontrollable factors. They told us to prepare for the worst. As for Dad, we’re not sure..." Lin Kangjian clenched his fist.
The incident had caught them completely off guard.
Without seeing the extent of their injuries, Lin Nannan couldn’t tell. She had initially felt relieved hearing that the old man had taken the medicine, but their explanation made her heart sink again. She feared the doctors were right—Grandfather was getting up there in years, and the recent events had left him physically and mentally exhausted...
"Can I go in?" Lin Nannan asked.
The Lin brothers exchanged glances and shook their heads in unison.
"The surgery has already begun. I’m afraid not," Lin Kangnian explained.
Lin Nannan pressed her lips together, momentarily at a loss for what to do.
"Let’s wait a little longer. They have the medicine you gave them. They’ll pull through," Lin Kangnian said softly, understanding her intentions. "Grandfather wouldn’t want you going in at a time like this..."
Lin Nannan knew the risks of her valuable medicine, but at this moment, there seemed to be no other way.
She thought that if anything happened to the old master or Mr. Lin, the whole Lin family would probably be thrown into chaos.
They had always treated Du Du well, and she didn’t want anything bad to happen to them.
"Third Brother, go get your wound treated so you don’t ruin your hand," Lin Nannan reminded him, emphasizing that Lin Kangsheng’s hand was crucial and couldn't risk even a tiny mistake.
Lin Kangsheng glanced at the emergency room and then nodded.
"Third Brother, I’ll go with you!" Lin Kangjian said immediately after noticing Zhang Shengguo approaching.
Lin Kangsheng didn’t refuse, and the two brothers acknowledged Zhang Shengguo before heading off.
"Any news?" Zhang Shengguo asked as he walked over.
"They’re still inside. We don’t know the situation yet," Lin Kangnian said grimly.
Zhang Shengguo’s face fell. "My father said to just say if you need anything."
"Not for now. We’re all here," Lin Kangnian replied gratefully.
Zhang Shengguo nodded and went quiet.
With him silent and Lin Kangnian quiet as well, the atmosphere grew heavy, almost suffocating.
Lin Nannan couldn’t stand this kind of tension.
"How are things outside? Did they get them all?" Lin Nannan asked softly, thinking back to what had just happened.
"Who was captured?" Lin Kangnian flinched and asked urgently.
Without hesitation, Zhang Shengguo jumped in, "Lin Nannan lured them to the empty lot outside the hospital and, taking advantage of their attempt to capture her, nabbed them all at once."
Lin Kangnian looked utterly astonished. "Lin Nannan, what were you thinking, taking a risk like that?"
He wasn’t happy about the capture at all—all he could think about was how easily things could have gone wrong and Lin Nannan could have been hurt. He was furious.
With Grandfather and Father already in danger, adding Lin Nannan to the mix would have been too much. He was afraid Grandmother would’ve been devastated…
"I knew what I was doing," Lin Nannan said calmly. "I didn’t know what was happening, but A Min was also ambushed at home. They were making a desperate move, trying to seize any chance they had. If they had escaped, we’d have missed our shot. With Zhang Shengguo’s help, we made it seem like I had no one left around me, so we managed to trap them all."
It was understandable that no one had thought of Zhang Shengguo—after arriving in the capital, she had been in contact with him but hadn’t seen him, so he was easily overlooked.
In the end, her plan proved successful.
Those people walked right into the trap!
"Regardless, you have to make sure you’re safe. This time, you just got lucky. If they had been completely reckless, you could’ve lost your life!" Lin Kangsheng said sternly.
What could Lin Nannan do but nod in agreement?
Shortly after they finished talking, Zhou Cuiwei came hurrying over, frantic.
"Ah Nian, how are your father and grandfather?" she asked breathlessly.
"They’re still inside. They haven’t come out yet," Lin Kangnian said solemnly.
"Your father is in there too?" Zhou Cuiwei’s tone changed abruptly, filled with tension.
Lin Kangsheng nodded and said quietly, "Their conditions aren’t good. They still haven’t come out."
Zhou Cuiwei clenched her hands tightly, thrown for a loop by this news.
Lin Nannan let out a soft sigh and said in a low voice, "They should have taken the medicine I gave them. No matter what, that should at least save their lives!"
As for what'd happen afterward, it was hard to say.
Unable to see them, Zhou Cuiwei was a nervous wreck. She kept questioning Lin Nannan’s reassurance, saying nothing mattered more than them pulling through.
As long as they were alive, that was enough for her.
Time dragged on, and everyone’s faces grew grimmer. The longer it took, the more it suggested either complications during the surgery or severe injuries...
Lin Kangsheng came back after getting his hand bandaged. No one had left; they were all waiting, waiting for news from inside.
While they waited anxiously, the folks back home were even more on edge. With no news from Lin Nannan’s side for so long, Zhao Zhi finally couldn’t sit still and came to check on the situation.
All the cars were gone from home, so she walked the entire way.
Fortunately, when Lin Nannan and the others had left earlier, they had drawn out the shady characters. With Zhang Shengshi’s help, they had rounded up all the troublemakers. Thanks to that, Zhao Zhi was able to find them safely. Otherwise, who knows what might have happened.
"Why did you come?" Lin Kangnian asked without any warmth when he saw her.
Seeing them all gathered outside the operating room, Zhao Zhi put two and two together and said gravely, "Grandma and the others were getting antsy since you hadn’t returned. No one could stop them from coming, so I said I’d come check first and call home later..."
Everyone exchanged glances, knowing that Grandma was already suspicious. It would be impossible to keep this from her. If she came and found out that Grandpa and Dad were seriously injured, it might be too much for her...
"Ah Sheng, you go back first," Zhou Cuiwei said, pulling herself together while everyone was worrying. Knowing they had to keep it from Grandma at all costs, she decisively added, "Earlier, Nan Nan mentioned you were injured but didn’t say anything about Grandpa or your uncle. When you go back, calm Grandma down and tell her that Grandpa and the others are busy mopping up the operation. She probably won’t suspect anything."
As for how long they could keep it hidden, no one knew.
For now, they could only take it one day at a time...
Lin Kangjian, worried that Lin Kangsheng might not handle it alone, went with him. Zhou Cuiwei, too upset to go back without spilling the beans, stayed behind.
Not long after they left, the tightly shut doors finally opened, and a doctor emerged...
"How are they?" they all rushed forward to ask.
The doctor, accustomed to such scenes, calmly replied, "The old gentleman’s surgery isn’t over yet, but Mr. Lin’s surgery is finished. Fortunately, he’s in good health. Although he lost a lot of blood during the operation, it was successful. Now we just need to observe him for a few days and wait for him to pass the critical period."
"Can we see him?" Zhou Cuiwei asked, her eyes red.
The critical period meant her heart was still weighed with worry.
"Later. The patient can’t be moved right now."
"Thank you, Doctor!"
One surgery was successful but still carried risks; the other wasn’t finished yet, and the outcome was unknown. Everyone felt heavy-hearted, and no one had the energy to speak...
Shortly after Lin Zhaoyou was wheeled out, the old gentleman’s surgery also concluded, but the situation was not optimistic.
"The surgery was successful, but given his age and the significant blood loss, it’s hard to say how he’ll recover. We’ll have to see how he responds..." The doctor’s words made everyone's hearts sink, especially since there was a real chance the old gentleman might not wake up.
