Chapter 712
by 夏至三候Chapter 712
An Unexpected Mission
Learning that Hu Zhaoxia's condition was better than expected, Lin Nannan felt relieved.
With the elders gone and Lu Hang busy, she took Lu Dudu to check on the growth of the seeds in the fields, dig for herbs in the back hills, and when boredom struck, she would spar with Lu Hang. Both were highly skilled, and their sparring sessions began drawing spectators. With Lin Nannan's abilities, it became almost like a routine, a way to pass the time.
During this period, updates about Hu Zhaoxia's recovery kept coming to Lin Nannan through Political Commissar Chen.
What was initially a life-threatening situation had, thanks to the medicine Lin Nannan provided, stabilized enough that at the hospital, a re-examination allowed for surgery. Now, she was in recovery.
This matter was kept confidential. Political Commissar Chen and his wife did not inform others but only shared it with their children, instructing them not to disclose anything. They passed it off as a local misdiagnosis, offering no further details.
Moreover, word from there wouldn't reach here. When asked, Political Commissar Chen simply said she was recovering and avoided elaborating, so no one knew what role Lin Nannan had played.
Nevertheless, Political Commissar Chen's family was extremely grateful to Lin Nannan. Even before Hu Zhaoxia returned, care packages from the Chen family showed up, most of them for Du Du—things you couldn't get locally, showing their thoughtfulness.
Everyone in the residential compound was aware of the relationship between Hu Zhaoxia and Lin Nannan, so when they learned Hu Zhaoxia had sent gifts for Du Du, nobody made much of it. Being remembered by others was a skill in itself, something to be admired but not envied.
For Lin Nannan and Lu Hang, this time was precious, and they cherished it deeply.
Just as they were savoring this time, Lu Hang was suddenly given a mission. It came so abruptly that they didn't even have time to say goodbye. Lu Hang packed his things and left in a hurry.
Upon hearing the news, Lin Nannan rushed back with Du Du but didn't catch him in time. She only caught a distant glimpse of Lu Hang putting someone in a vehicle before getting in himself. The car started, and they missed their chance to bid farewell…
Suddenly realizing something, Lin Nannan turned around with Du Du and went straight to Political Commissar Chen.
The office door was open, and Political Commissar Chen was writing something, head down. She knocked, and he looked up, surprised to see her. "What are you doing here?" he asked.
After entering with Du Du, Lin Nannan hesitated before asking, "Political Commissar Chen, is Lu Hang's mission related to Yu Yao? Has he confessed?"
Political Commissar Chen looked at her in astonishment. "How did you know?"
He didn't think Lu Hang would share such details with Lin Nannan. The couple respected each other's boundaries and never pried into each other's work, so he trusted Lu Hang wouldn't violate protocol.
Lin Nannan didn't hide it. "I heard Lu Hang was on a mission, so I rushed back with Du Du. From a distance, I saw them putting someone in a vehicle and thought of Yu Yao. That's why I came to ask—since this matter involves me."
Political Commissar Chen motioned for her to sit, got her a glass of water, and said earnestly, "Normally, this wouldn't be disclosed, but the brass just said that if you wanted to know, I could tell you. They don’t want you walking into danger unaware."
Those familiar with Lin Nannan's situation knew she wasn't restricted to the military base—she chose not to leave to avoid unnecessary risks, even not seeing her relatives off to stay safe.
The entire situation started with Yu Yao's betrayal. Though Lin Nannan hadn't left the base, higher-ups wanted to keep her informed so she could assess the situation and protect herself.
"So I guessed right. Yu Yao confessed, which is why he was taken away, correct?" Lin Nannan said with understanding.
Political Commissar Chen nodded. "You guessed correctly. Yu Yao revealed critical information and is now a protected witness. He needs to be protected and safely transported to his destination."
Lin Nannan frowned, her expression turning serious. "Does that mean Lu Hang and the others could be in danger during transport?"
"They're aware of what the mission involves and will make necessary arrangements. Don't worry," Political Commissar Chen reassured her, thinking she was concerned for Lu Hang.
"Completing his mission is his duty, no matter the risks. What puzzles me is why Yu Yao suddenly confessed. He was holding firm before—what changed?" she voiced her doubt.
Political Commissar Chen chuckled lightly. "He was stubborn, but he has a foolish daughter who ruined his plans and got their people killed. Now, they just want Yu Yao dead. He initially held onto hope, but then something happened to the Yu family…"
Lin Nannan was shocked. "They targeted the Yu family?"
"Yes, Yu Yao's son is dead," Political Commissar Chen sighed. "If Yu Yao had come forward sooner, we would have arranged protection or relocation for his family. Given the magnitude of the case, he might even have had a chance to earn leniency by cooperating. But he didn’t do it, and in the end, his family suffered. Now, it’s too late for regrets."
Lin Nannan was stunned by this revelation. Holding Lu Dudu tightly, she was speechless for a while.
"Judging by Yu Yao’s attitude toward Yu Ying, he must have cherished his son deeply. Now that his son is dead, he’ll probably seek revenge, ready to go down with them," Lin Nannan murmured softly, her mood somber.
She still couldn’t comprehend why Yu Yao had made such choices.
"Sigh, in this whole affair, Yu Yao was also deceived," Political Commissar Chen said, not quite sure how to put it. "Yu Yao’s son had an illness that was essentially a death sentence according to doctors. But someone convinced him that medicine from overseas could save his son, and he believed it."
"In the end, though, he ultimately got his own son killed."
Political Commissar Chen sighed again and said, "Yes, his son died after all. The key point is that he was deceived from start to finish. He kept his son’s illness a secret, so we were in the dark. If we had known, perhaps Lu Jianan could have used your medicine to save him."
This was something Lin Nannan had never expected—that the medicine she provided might have been able to save the boy.
"Does Yu Yao know?" she asked.
"He knows," Political Commissar Chen replied. "Lu Hang informed Lu Jianan about Yu Yao’s son’s condition and asked if there was any way to treat it. Lu Jianan said that originally, there was no cure. But with your medicine, while it might not fully heal him, it could save his life, allowing him to live into adulthood. And who knows how medical science will advance in a decade or two? By then, it might be a minor issue." At this point, Political Commissar Chen’s tone grew heavy, as he recalled his own wife nearly died, which was only averted thanks to Lin Nannan’s intervention.
