Chapter 110
by 夏至三候Chapter 110
Homecoming
"Exactly," Lu Fang said with disdain. "Now that you mention it, none of the kids in this family amount to much!"
Lu Ming, on the receiving end of such disdain, mumbled in protest, "It's not that bad, is it?"
"Can you beat your sister-in-law in a fight?" Lu Fang asked bluntly.
Lu Ming bit back his words, thinking of something but ultimately refraining from saying—*My older brother might not be able to beat her either.*
He didn’t want to provoke his brother, but as he looked at Lin Nannan, he couldn’t help but ask curiously, "Sis, if you're so strong, how did the Lins ever bully you before?"
"Who bullied whom? Think carefully!" Lin Nannan kindly reminded him.
She didn’t think the original owner had been bullied—if anything, it was the Lins who suffered.
"Really? But isn’t that what everyone in the village says?" he asked, utterly confused.
At this, Zhang Xiaofeng’s mood brightened.
"What do the villagers know? Even the Lins had no idea how capable your sister-in-law was. When she was with them, she couldn’t care less about their nonsense. If they bullied her, she’d make sure they regretted it. They thought she was stupid and didn’t dare provoke her. After she married into our family and turned out to be such a skilled farmer, the Lins were eating their hearts out with regret. If they’d kept her at home, they could’ve made a fortune. They're probably sick with regret now." The thought of the Lins’ frustration and the villagers’ jealousy gave her immense satisfaction.
Back then, so many people had mocked their family for A Hang marrying a fool, saying a cripple and a fool were a perfect match. Now? They’re probably regretting it.
Lu Ming thought it over and found his aunt’s words somewhat reasonable, but he was still dying of curiosity. "Sis, did the Lins really have no idea about the things you learned?"
"They wouldn’t pay attention to a ‘fool.’ Besides, I was living off the mountains—they had no hold over me anyway."
"So, in the end, the Lins were the dumb ones all along?" Lu Ming scratched his head, realizing his sister-in-law was the cleverest of them all.
"Why waste breath on them? Aren’t you tired? After all that excitement, go rest. We’ll need to buy food later!" Zhang Xiaofeng urged.
Lu Ming muttered 'Oh' and obediently climbed up to lie down...
Since the train compartment was occupied only by their family, there was no unwanted company.
Once everyone had fallen asleep, Lin Nannan lay beside Lu Hang and murmured to him...
"Doesn't something feel off to you?"
Lu Hang turned to her. "What do you mean?"
Lin Nannan analyzed seriously, "Earlier, I heard Commander Zhang say your mission failed, right?"
This was Lu Hang’s biggest failure. At her words, he nodded immediately. "Yes."
"You failed, got badly injured, and yet the other side won. They should’ve been glad you were left hanging by a thread. So why try to kill you? Did you unknowingly learn something you shouldn’t have?" After careful consideration, she still couldn’t figure it out.
Lu Hang went still.
He hadn’t considered this before.
"You’re saying... there’s something I know that they want to silence, right?" he asked.
Lin Nannan leaned closer, her voice falling to a whisper. "Exactly," she added. "When you get back, you should ask Commander Zhang and find out if anyone else from your team was taken out..."
Flatly, Lu Hang replied, "No, I can swear to that!"
"Why?" she asked in confusion.
"If there were, the captain would have mentioned it and taken it seriously. But so far, they’ve only targeted me. If I’m not mistaken, the captain and the others probably think Zhu Yu acted from guilt and wouldn’t suspect anything deeper."
Lin Nannan rubbed her head in exasperation and urged, "Then think carefully—was there anything unusual? Maybe that’ll explain why they’re after you."
Lu Hang, who had never doubted this before, frowned and said helplessly, "It’s been so long. How could I possibly remember?"
The mission had failed, and he had been severely injured. At the time, he was disheartened and his mind was a mess. He couldn’t recall anything then, let alone now.
"If you can’t remember, you’ll be waiting to get whacked!" Lin Nannan snapped irritably.
Lu Hang was getting a headache. "I’ll think about it properly when we get back!"
"Mm." Lin Nannan nodded, not pushing him further.
What worried her now was that whoever’s after us might keep coming, potentially dragging the Lu family into danger.
The whole situation was stressing her out too.
With Lu Ming and Lu Fang handling the groceries and Zhang Xiaofeng helping take care of Lu Hang, Lin Nannan mostly just helped Lu Hang move now and then. It was surprisingly comfortable, especially since the whole family shared a compartment—resting and waking up around the same time, with no noise to disturb them. It really cheered her up.
After getting off the train, Lu Fang and his wife, fearing trouble, booked it straight home without a moment’s delay.
Once they arrived, Lu Fang, his wife, and Lu Ming all heaved a sigh of relief, clearly feeling safe at last.
Lin Nannan and Lu Hang exchanged a glance and couldn’t help laughing.
Seeing their reactions, Grandma Lu frowned and asked, "What’s going on?"
Nobody wanted to say, afraid of alarming her, so they all stayed silent, making sure not to spill anything.
"It’s nothing. We’re just relieved to be home," Lu Fang quickly explained.
"What did the doctors say about A Hang?" Grandma Lu asked.
At this, their faces fell.
Their looks told Grandma Lu the news wasn’t good. She sighed deeply and said, "Well, at least A Hang can move around a bit now."
"Yes, the doctors said he’s been well taken care of—his muscles haven’t deteriorated at all," Zhang Xiaofeng added, trying to highlight the good part.
"That’s all thanks to Nan Nan!" Grandma Lu replied instinctively, having noticed how careful she’s been.
"Exactly! We only just found out Nan Nan has picked up so much—she even knows medicine. She understands how to care for A Hang, which is why he’s recovering so well," Zhang Xiaofeng praised.
This surprised Grandma Lu, who turned to Lin Nannan and asked, "You really know medicine?"
Thinking of how complicated Chinese medicine is, Lin Nannan clarified, "Not exactly. I only know a bit about treating wounds."
If people found out she knew medicine and asked her to treat them, she’d be stuck—whether to help or not.
So, better not to make a big deal about it. She just wanted to focus on healing Lu Hang and stay out of trouble.
"That’s already wonderful," Grandma Lu praised, then clasped her hands together and said, "The heavens are finally looking out for us. With Nan Nan in our family, everything is getting better."
Lin Nannan winced, thinking, *Why credit the heavens? I’m the one doing the work!*
Seeing her annoyed look, Lu Hang couldn’t help laughing.
Her confusion was plain as day on her face.
...
What happened outside was something Lu Fang and his wife had intended to keep quiet about. But with Lu Ming being the blabbermouth he is, bragging to Lu Yuan in excitement—well, soon the whole family knew.
"Where were you cut by a knife?" Pan Xiaoping, who happened to be passing by, overheard her son mentioning being slashed and immediately blurted out in alarm. This startled both Lu Ming and Lu Yuan and also brought Grandma Lu running.
"Cut by a knife? Who got hurt?" Grandma Lu, who cared deeply for her family, rushed out immediately.
Lu Ming’s arm was still bandaged, the scar plain to see—there was no hiding it now.
Thus, Lu Fang was forced to recount what had happened in the city, scaring Pan Xiaoping and Grandma Lu so badly they cried.
"How could something like this happen? If it weren’t for Nan Nan’s quick thinking and timely return, you all would've killed me!" Grandma Lu, recalling the situation, couldn’t shake off her lingering fear, her emotions running high.
Not just her—Pan Xiaoping was also deeply unsettled, clutching her son, refusing to let go.
Thinking of the wound on her son’s arm, she seethed with anger. "They’ve gone too far! A Hang's already down like this, yet they still won’t let go—even plotting to wipe out our entire family. What kind of sick grudge is this?"
"Exactly! I thought once A Hang left the military, he’d be safe. Who knew just a trip to the hospital could turn so terrifying!" Grandma Lu said anxiously.
Lin Nannan noticed Grandma Lu’s agitation and immediately went to her side, rubbing her shoulders until the tension slowly eased and she felt much better.
"Whew!" Grandma Lu exhaled deeply. "Nan Nan, you've got magic hands. I feel so much better now."
"Grandma, you’re getting older. You shouldn’t get too worked up. If something’s bothering you, don't bottle it up, okay?" Lin Nannan said with concern.
After a pause, Grandma Lu nodded. "I understand, dear."
"Grandma, you can relax. The squad will take care of this properly. Nothing like this will happen again, so please don’t overthink it," Lu Hang reassured her, though what he really wanted was to uncover why they were still being targeted.
Since Lin Nannan’s warning, he had sensed something was off but couldn’t pinpoint exactly what...
With Lu Ming exposing the whole incident and frightening the Lu family, everyone was worn out and went to bed early that night, in no mood for anything.
The next morning, Lu Hua arrived early. She wanted to see how Lu Hang was doing and also check if her daughter was doing well at school—whether she was still mixed up with that guy.
The first thing Lu Hang said upon seeing his aunt was an apology. "Auntie, I’m sorry. Qian Qian got dragged into this because of me."
This left the rest of the Lu family and Lu Hua utterly confused.
"What does Qian Qian’s situation have to do with you?" she asked, bewildered.
Lin Nannan jumped in, taking over the conversation to explain the whole incident and its outcome. "Feng Wu has already taken his mother back to the countryside. Qian Qian is safe at school—You can relax, Auntie."
Lu Hua hadn’t expected things to be so complicated.
"I knew it! Who does something that twisted? It was all planned. If I’d known earlier, I would’ve gone with you and taught him a lesson myself," Lu Hua fumed.
