On the Train

Lu Yuan saw Jiang Qianqian's stunned expression and chuckled to herself. It wasn’t until after her sister-in-law entered the family that she realized her cold-hearted and detached older brother could also be so full of favoritism.

When it came to his wife, he was attentive to every detail, completely devoted to her—his thoughts only had eyes for her. If Lu Yuan hadn’t also thought highly of her sister-in-law, she might have been fuming.

Jiang Qianqian wanted to tag along but needed to inform her family first. This time, Lu Ming talked Lu Hua into letting her come.

With Lin Nannan around, Lu Hang’s trips got a lot easier.

In the past, boarding and exiting was a hassle, but now, with her there and Lu Fang putting on an act to keep up appearances—though they stood out but didn’t raise eyebrows—they boarded the train smoothly.

The journey would take two days, so Lu Hang had a sleeper berth, specially requested through connections, while the others had hard seats in a separate carriage. Lin Nannan stayed behind to take care of Lu Hang, tucking the wheelchair away in a corner so he could sit for a bit when he got up.

In Lu Hang's eyes, there was only Lin Nannan. After boarding the train, he noticed that his wife, who was traveling for the first time, wasn’t filled with wide-eyed amazement but occasionally showed fleeting looks of disgust. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking.

He still vividly remembered his own awe at this giant machine the first time he rode a train, yet his little wife seemed to dislike it. How could she possibly dislike it?

"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly.

For convenience, they had bought a lower berth, so Lin Nannan sat by the bed, tidying up. Hearing his question, she replied casually, "This noise is unbearable!"

"It’ll quiet down after midnight," Lu Hang reassured her, worried she might fly into a rage if annoyed.

Lin Nannan pursed her lips, visibly unhappy.

She’d rather be back in the fields, checking on the crops...

As time passed, the plodding train made stops, and passengers came and went. Soon, all four berths in their compartment were occupied.

Besides Lin Nannan and Lu Hang, there was an elderly couple with a child and a trendy couple. Since Lu Hang’s group had arrived first, the others glanced at them but kept to themselves.

Inside the compartment, aside from murmurs between companions, no one initiated conversation.

Lin Nannan wasn’t one for socializing, so she wouldn’t bother others unless provoked—but if someone crossed her, they’d have to face the consequences.

Lu Hang had been lying down the whole time, so no one paid him much attention—until he decided to sit up, and Lin Nannan lifted him into the wheelchair. Instantly, all eyes in the compartment turned to them.

The couple remained unfazed until someone muttered, "What kind of wicked deeds must he have done to deserve such karma?"

Lin Nannan’s sharp, icy gaze snapped toward the speaker. "I’m the one who beat him like this. Want to try it yourself?"

"How dare you speak like that, young lady?" The woman, relying on her age to assert authority, spoke haughtily, expecting Lin Nannan to back down.

"You accused my husband of doing something awful. Now I’m telling you what happens to people who do evil. Tell me, where was I wrong?" she asked seriously.

The woman, who had spoken thoughtlessly, was left speechless. She hadn’t expected such a turning of the tables, and her face twisted in discomfort.

"You—" She raised a finger, ready to curse, but Lin Nannan broke off a piece of the wheelchair’s frame, her expression cold.
