Chapter 292
by 夏至三候Chapter 292
Liu Jinzhi Speaks
"You're here...?" Lin Nannan's tone was light and carefree.
"You okay?" Lu Hang's voice was filled with concern and tension.
To reassure him, Lin Nannan turned in a circle, letting him see she was unharmed, then said with a bright smile, "I’m fine—heck, you scared them off so fast they left behind some real treasures."
Having seen Lin Nannan build guns before, Lu Hang immediately understood what she meant by "good things." He replied meaningfully, "These guys had the nerve to rob and snatch people in broad daylight. We were afraid we wouldn’t find you, so we asked Zheng Jie for help. He knows Nan City like the back of his hand..."
The words sounded pleasant, but the deeper meaning was only understood between the couple.
What "help"? It was nothing but rubbing salt in Zheng Jie’s wound.
This was the place Zheng Jie had painstakingly hidden, only for it to be exposed because of a woman’s jealous tantrum. Zheng Jie was probably seeing red by now.
"We oughta thank him real good!" Lin Nannan responded with perfect understanding. Just then, footsteps echoed outside, and Lin Kangnian and Zheng Jie entered one after the other. Their reactions were starkly different—one grinning ear to ear, while the other scowling like thunder.
By the time Zheng Jie received the news, the two sides were already fighting. At that point, he only knew Lin Nannan had gone missing, unaware of what had happened.
After hearing the gist of the situation from Lu Hang, he wanted Liu Jinzhi gone yesterday.
That good-for-nothing idiot—she was supposed to handle one person, yet she brought them straight here! Did she want to kill him?!
He couldn’t even spare a thought for Liu Jinzhi, who had been caught outside. That woman knew what to say and what not to say. Besides, they still had a son together—if he were exposed, their child would be dead meat in Nan City.
What pained him more was the loss of the resources he had scraped together. Many of those items weren’t even available in their country—he had them smuggled in from abroad, all for the sake of crafting better weapons. And now, everything had been cleaned out in one go.
The sight before him had him gasping, but he clenched his jaw, not daring to utter a single word...
Watching Lin Nannan proudly showing off to Lu Hang, with Lin Kangnian chiming in, Zheng Jie felt a metallic taste rise in his throat—he was about to blow a gasket.
"Zheng Jie," Lin Nannan chimed in cheerfully, ignoring the storm of emotions in his eyes. "That Liu Jinzhi said you were the one behind her, that she kidnapped me on your orders..."
Zheng Jie’s heart pounded wildly, and he hurriedly cut her off. "She’s deliberately framing me, trying to drive a wedge between us! We have no grudges—why would I have you kidnapped? She’s just talking out her ass!"
Having expected his denial, Lin Nannan simply wanted to needle him further. "She said you backed her, that she could rule the roost in Nan City. Just because I ‘lacked brains’ and stuck my neck out for your wife and child in the capital, she took a grudge against me. Said I humiliated her and wanted me dead without a whole corpse!"
At first, Lu Hang and Lin Kangnian listened to her jabs at Zheng Jie as mere entertainment. But her last words instantly shifted the atmosphere—their gazes turned sharp and hostile, making Zheng Jie inwardly curse his luck.
His people had already withdrawn, and now he was surrounded by Lu Hang’s men. If things escalated, he wouldn’t stand a chance. Desperate, he explained, "You know Liu Jinzhi is just a side piece I keep. How could I let her strut around like that? Besides, I’m not even in Nan City all the time—who knows who she might’ve latched onto behind my back? That’s the only reason she’d dare to bring someone here so brazenly. If this were really my place, I’d hide it at all costs—would I let her act so recklessly?"
