    Chapter 148

    The Need for Innovation

Lin Nannan and Lu Hang were unfazed, which drew Wei Zhigao's attention to Lin Nannan.

It made sense that Lu Hang stayed calm—his past achievements and experience dealing with many people had likely accustomed him to such situations.

But Lin Nannan was different. As far as he knew, apart from a single trip with the Lu family after marrying Lu Hang, she hadn’t left home in over twenty years. How could someone so sheltered withstand Sir’s intimidating aura?

Even he, who had followed Sir for years, sometimes struggled when Sir was angry. This made him particularly curious about Lin Nannan. But Lu Hang spotted his curiosity right away. His gaze sharpened with displeasure, glaring at Wei Zhigao with clear hostility.

No husband likes another man eyeing his wife like that. Lu Hang’s hostile expression made Wei Zhigao belatedly realize his impropriety. He offered an apologetic smile, trying to show he meant no harm.

But Lu Hang wasn’t buying it. Instead, he silently resolved to bar this young man from visiting in the future.

Might’ve set him off if Lu Hang hadn’t already recovered.

Unaware of the tension, Hu Yunlai continued speaking to Lin Nannan, "You mentioned earlier that the remaining seeds are of unknown types. Why not bring them out for me to examine? Some may not grow well this season, and preparations could go to waste."

After some thought, Lin Nannan decided it was necessary to show him just how remarkable these seeds were. She replied tactfully, "These seeds grow year-round, but harvests differ."

In other words, suitable seasons and climates would maximize the harvest, while unfavorable conditions would reduce it.

"No way!" Even with some mental preparation, such a claim was staggering. Hu Yunlai felt he could hardly bear it.

Lin Nannan shrugged. "If you don’t believe me, just try it out!"

But how could they experiment with such precious seeds? "No one can afford to fail with these."

"Sir," Lin Nannan said solemnly, "Don’t just rely on what worked before. Be bold and innovate. Who says crops can’t be grown out of season? When it’s cold, we cover ourselves with blankets. When it’s hot, we fan ourselves. There’s no problem that can’t be solved—it just depends on whether you have the courage and the will."

Hu Yunlai, nearing the end of his life, suddenly felt a surge of inspiration. He praised, "Well said! You’ve got guts, kid—bold and brave. Unlike an old man like me, who’s spent a lifetime studying the land but never grasped things as clearly as you."

Everyone else gaped. They had expected sir to scold Lin Nannan, but instead, he accepted her words with remarkable openness. Meanwhile, their minds were still tangled—humans could wear clothes when cold and fan themselves when hot, but how could plants do the same?

Lin Nannan liked Hu Yunlai’s response. She couldn’t stand know-it-alls. The old man, despite his age, was refreshingly clear-minded, earning her admiration.

Over their time together, she had come to realize that Hu Yunlai was a calm and unassuming man, indifferent to competition as long as it didn’t involve seeds or crops. This made him well-liked by many.

"If you’re up for it, we should talk more!" These were the foundations of progress. Lin Nannan felt that hoarding knowledge would do little for the grand plan of food production. It was better to share it with sir, who could spread it further. The more folks know, the more ideas we’ll get—which would ultimately benefit her own seed collection.
