    Chapter 361

    Something’s About to Happen

She’d left early yesterday morning and only returning near dawn, Lin Nannan was utterly exhausted. Hearing the hint of warning in Lu Hang's words, she immediately stopped fidgeting, afraid she wouldn’t be able to get up later.

"Clean up and get some sleep," he said, patting her back.

"What about you?" Lin Nannan asked worriedly.

    He hadn’t slept all night.

"I’m off today—I’ll stay with you," Lu Hang replied.

Lin Nannan instantly lit up. "Great!"

Before resting, Lu Hang boiled water, prepared a bowl of milk powder for Lin Nannan to tide her over, and then cooked a pot of porridge, keeping it warm with the remaining embers so they could eat when they woke up.

Lin Nannan could only watch, impressed, unable to help with any of it.

The couple finally fell asleep after daybreak; they slept like logs, so soundly that not even the noise of children downstairs could wake them.

Lin Nannan woke up because she was hungry, drawn by the smell of porridge in the room. She got up to fill her stomach.

The moment she moved, Lu Hang stirred.

"Hungry?" he asked groggily, his voice thick with sleep.

"Yeah," Lin Nannan nodded. "Go back to sleep. I’ll just have some porridge."

Lu Hang rolled over and grabbed his clothes. "I’m hungry too. Go wash up—I’ll stir-fry some pickles."

"Okay!" While Lin Nannan wasn’t fussy about food, she had learned what tasted good and what didn’t.

After finishing her meal and heading out, Xiao Pei called out from downstairs, "Nan Nan, we’ve already prepped yesterday’s herbs—they’re all drying in the backyard."

"So fast? Did you all not sleep?" Lin Nannan asked in surprise.

"We slept a little, but the kids were noisy, so we got up. Nothing else to do anyway," Xiao Pei explained.

Everyone nodded in agreement, leaving Lin Nannan torn between laughter and frustration.

"Alright, then you handle those herbs," Lin Nannan assigned.

Xiao Pei immediately caught her meaning. "We’re not going into the mountains today?"

"No. Today, we’ll organize all the herbs first. We’ll go tomorrow, with the men tagging along. That way, we stay safe without delaying work," Lin Nannan explained.

No one objected to the plan—after all, this was a group effort, and everyone was on board.

Since it was their own affair, there was no need to consult anyone else, which was why their all-night absence hadn’t raised any eyebrows.

The next day, after mapping out the rough spot, Lin Nannan led the army wives out.

Since their escorts wouldn’t join them until after work, they had to head out on their own for now.

Daytime was manageable—they were used to it—so they joked and laughed along the way, their faces bright with hope.

With Lin Nannan leading, familiar paths required no effort. Only in unfamiliar areas did she swing her machete to clear brush, ensuring no one stepped into danger.

"Let's stop here for now. Everyone, take a seat, grab some water, and then we'll get to work!" Lin Nannan instructed.

"Don't worry, we know what to do!"

This wasn’t a new situation—this wasn’t their first time, so the military wives already knew their tasks well and didn’t need Lin Nannan to remind them repeatedly.

Lin Nannan thought the same. After all, the military wives picked better herbs than she did. They knew what to do, so she left them to it and focused on collecting the herbs she needed.

But you can’t get too comfortable—the moment you relax, trouble strikes.
