    Chapter 542

    The Explanation

As for what happened to Lu Yuan, it was Jiang Xiaopeng's plan, though it didn't succeed. They took advantage of Jiang Xiaomeng's ignorance of the outcome while she was in the hospital and deceived her, essentially setting things up for her.

Lu Yuan originally didn't know that Lu Hang was unharmed. She was only told when it was time for her to be moved. As for what exactly happened, she had no idea at all. These past few days had scared her half to death, so she needed proper reassurance and an explanation.

"Then we’ll go see her tomorrow," Lu Hang said.

Knowing that Lu Hang and Lin Nannan would be taking the child back to the military base, everyone weren’t in the mood to keep talking. No one suggested going out shopping again either—once was scary enough. If it happened again, no one could handle it.

After a good night’s rest, Lin Nannan woke up the next morning and roused a soundly sleeping Lu Dudu, planning to take her to see Lu Yuan.

She had been thinking about her little niece and wanted to make sure she could get some cuddles and kisses in before leaving.

When the Lin family saw them preparing to take Lu Dudu out, they tried to hold them back at first. But upon learning they were going to see Lu Yuan, they didn’t interfere.

Arranged by Lin Kangnian, they took a car directly to the research institute. Lu Yuan, already informed of their visit, was waiting at the entrance. When she saw Lu Dudu, she rushed over excitedly, cupping the little face and covering her face in kisses, startling Lu Dudu so much that she waved her arms and legs in protest, nearly causing Lin Nannan to lose hold of her.

"Do you have to be so excited? We brought her to you, and you’re still scaring her like this!" Lin Nannan simply plopped Lu Dudu into her arms, letting the two of them sort themselves out.

Lu Yuan held her squirming niece close, leaned in, and took a big whiff of her, which looked pretty weird.

Lu Dudu was frightened and fought it hard, but her parents paid no attention, so she eventually had to give in.

Holding her baby-scented niece, Lu Yuan led her brother and sister-in-law to her place.

At the research institute, even with special care, conditions were limited. Fortunately, she had a place to herself—neat and simple, without too much hassle.

She carried Lu Dudu all the way there, noticing how much heavier the little one felt. Once they reached her room, she set her down on the bed to give her arms a rest.

In the new environment, Lu Dudu was a bit reserved. She didn’t climb around but instead curiously looked around...

Lin Nannan sat by the bed to prevent her daughter from falling off, while Lu Hang took a seat on a chair. After pouring water for them, Lu Yuan sat by the bed, reached out to play with Lu Dudu, and asked about the previous day’s events.

"Brother, sister-in-law, what exactly happened? Was my brother never injured, or was his injury not that serious? Who did you catch yesterday?"

Since they had come precisely to explain the situation, Lin Nannan didn’t hold back. She spelled out the whole story from beginning to end and then said apologetically, "If we hadn’t kept you in the dark, we were afraid you might accidentally reveal something. The matter was too important, so we had to let you endure it for a while."

Lu Yuan wasn’t angry. Instead, she let out a huge sigh of relief and said, "Thank God it was nothing. You have no idea how those days were—I couldn’t sleep at night, terrified of how to break the news to Mom and Dad. It’s such a relief it was all fake!"

"Thankfully you held up and didn’t tell Mom and Dad. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been able to keep up the act," Lin Nannan praised.

"If it had been real, I wouldn’t have dared to say anything either. When big brother was injured before, it felt like the sky had fallen at home. If it happened again, Mom and Dad definitely couldn’t take it. So I had to bear it alone, thinking that with you here, sister-in-law, I could hold on a little longer…" Recalling those days of anxiety, Lu Yuan felt exhausted.
