Chapter 53

Treated Like an Ox
"Yes, yes! Sister-in-law, you must never call out '01' again in the future. If anyone notices, there could really be trouble!" Lu Yuan immediately chimed in.
Their family was just curious about these things, but others wouldn’t think the same way. So, the most important thing now was to protect their sister-in-law.
Lin Nannan rubbed her forehead and said, "If it hadn’t been so chaotic just now, I wouldn’t have called out!"
She wasn’t stupid—she knew the risks involved. But she had no choice. She’d originally recorded her voice thinking it’d be useful in ancient times, assuming it wouldn’t require charging—just some sunlight would suffice. Who knew it’d end up as the wheelchair’s voice controller?
Lu Hang was too weak, so a regular wheelchair was useless. To give herself more time to work in the fields, she had no choice but to do this. Worst case, she’d just push him to the fields. But as everyone knew, she never intended for them to find out the wheelchair could be voice-controlled.
Yet, Lu Ming’s fussing made her accidentally blurt it out.
The Lu family valued her above all else. Even though they realized the wheelchair was crucial and possibly very valuable, they showed no greed—only concern for her safety. This left her with an odd but comforting warmth.
"See what you did?" Pan Xiaoping fumed, smacking her son. Her eyes were blazing with reproach.
Lu Ming hadn’t expected things to turn out this way. For once, he didn’t talk back. Instead, he scratched his head guiltily and said, "Sister-in-law, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to."
"It’s fine," Lin Nannan replied. Then, after a moment of thought, she added in a peculiar tone, "Hey, what if even if you told others I made this wheelchair, no one would believe you?"
Everyone froze. They realized Nan Nan might be right. After all, in the eyes of the villagers, Lin Nannan was just a fool.
"They really might not believe it!" Lu Yuan suddenly remembered something and kicked the ground. "People all think Sister-in-law is an idiot. Some even joked that if they’d known she was so strong and good at farming, they would’ve married her just to use her like an ox—it’d be worth it!"
"Who said that? Why didn’t you tell me?" Zhang Xiaofeng fumed. "If I knew who it was, I’d rip their mouths open!"
Her precious daughter-in-law, being mocked as an ox—how could she swallow that anger?
Lu Yuan sighed. "Mom, I was furious too. I wanted to fight them, but several people were talking together. As soon as I stormed over, they switched topics and said I must’ve misheard. Who could I even confront?"
If she could, she would’ve charged at them herself.
"It’s fine. Let them talk. The more they say it, the safer I am!" Lin Nannan said, completely unbothered.
As long as she wasn’t actually a fool, people could say whatever they wanted.
"But then they’ll always think you’re a fool!" Zhang Xiaofeng disagreed.
At first, when the Lin family switched brides for A Hang, she had been unwilling. But her mother-in-law insisted, and she agreed, thinking it would be good for her son to have someone by his side.
Yet, the slap of reality came swiftly. The ‘fool’ everyone had written off turned out to be a treasure—learned, intelligent, and strong, caring for A Hang with more attentiveness than any of them. Now she was dead set on protecting her and wouldn’t tolerate a single word against her.
"But in others’ eyes, I *am* a fool!" Lin Nannan grinned. "Mom, I really don’t mind. Actually, it’s perfect—it keeps me and the family safe. I just want to farm without trouble!"
