Chapter 100

The Arrest
"I don’t even know whether I should hate Zhu Yu or thank him now," Lu Hang said with a wry laugh, speaking of the conflict in his heart. "He betrayed me, but because of that, I met you..."
He left it unspoken, but Lin Nannan understood what he meant.
If he had remained unharmed, he would have been the most valued son-in-law of the Lin family, and he and Lin Nannan would never have been together.
She gave a helpless half-smile. "A traitor is a traitor. How can you still remember any good in him? Have you ever thought about how much pain your situation has caused your family?"
Lu Hang was silent for a while before saying, "I just can’t understand... why he would betray us."
"Money, power, women... it’s always about those things. Try not to dwell on it." Lin Nannan knew he would struggle with this—after all, Zhu Yu had once been his most trusted comrade. It was only natural that he found it hard to accept.
Lu Hang’s mood remained low, affected by the situation. Lin Nannan tried to reassure him briefly before letting him work through it himself.
...
When Zhu Yu, assigned to a task, saw Zhang Shengguo rushing toward him, his stomach dropped. But he reassured himself that he had covered his tracks—as long as Lu Hang died, even if he was suspected, there would be no evidence. At worst, he’d just have to resign and leave the military.
With that thought, he calmed down and continued acting as if nothing had happened.
However, this wasn’t how Zhu Yu expected things to go. The moment Zhang Shengguo saw him, he had his men grab him. This wasn’t part of Zhu Yu’s plan, and panic immediately set in.
"Regimental Commander, what’s the meaning of this?" he shouted. The others nearby noticed the commotion and looked at each other, crowding around, confused, wondering what was going on.
"What’s the meaning of this?" Zhang Shengguo sneered at Zhu Yu, who dared to ask. "Did you think killing the girl at the barracks’ guest quarters would leave no evidence and erase your second visit there?"
Zhu Yu had expected suspicion, but he still insisted, "Regimental Commander, what are you talking about? I’ve been here training the whole time—I never left. How could I have killed anyone?"
"Is that so?" Zhang Shengguo produced the sketch Lin Nannan had drawn, his expression stern. "Lu Hang is alive. The Lu family is unharmed. And we’ve already uncovered your tracks!"
Seeing the sketch that perfectly matched his face, Zhu Yu was dumbstruck.
He had thought of countless ways to deny the accusations, but he never expected they would identify him through a drawing first.
"I—" Zhu Yu tried to argue, but Zhang Shengguo gave him no chance, dragging him away. However, they were stopped.
The ones who stopped them were Zhu Yu’s former comrades—soldiers who had once served under Lu Hang. When they learned that Zhu Yu had tried to kill Lu Hang, they immediately recalled their earlier suspicions of a traitor after Lu Hang was severely injured. But they never imagined the traitor would be one of their own.
Remembering how Zhu Yu had been the most vocal in condemning the traitor during their discussions, they now realized the hypocrisy—he was the traitor all along.
"Why?" The men glared at Zhu Yu with seething fury, their emotions running high.
The depth of their loyalty to Lu Hang was matched only by their hatred for Zhu Yu.
If not for their restraint, they would have beaten Zhu Yu to death on the spot.
Zhu Yu avoided their furious gazes, guilt-ridden, wishing he could disappear immediately.
"Did Regimental Commander Lu treat you poorly? When you were in danger during a mission, it was him who saved you! And this is how you repay him—not only betraying him but trying to kill his entire family! Zhu Yu, have you no shame?" A soldier close to Lu Hang shouted angrily, his eyes red with rage.
