Chapter 185
by 夏至三候Chapter 185
Xue He's Invitation
This time, Xue He joined them.
Although he had already heard from Tian Jia and the others how they met, he still asked again, hoping to learn more.
Tian Jia and her team had been questioned so often that they could now recite the answers automatically—they were used to it by now.
The group rushed over, but upon reaching the village entrance, Xue He worried about alarming the villagers. He thought it would be better to keep a low profile, so he had the others wait outside while he, along with his security detail and Tian Jia, went ahead…
They arrived at the Lu family home and learned that Lin Nannan was in the fields. The group exchanged puzzled glances, unable to understand why Lin Nannan didn’t focus on more important matters but instead enjoyed farming.
When they reached the fields, they saw Lin Nannan wearing a straw hat, sowing seeds. She seemed to be saying something to the girl beside her, who nodded solemnly, making an interruption seem unwelcome.
However, how intently they were staring was impossible for Lin Nannan to ignore…
"Don’t overthink it, just plant them!" Lin Nannan patted Lu Yuan’s shoulder, said a few more words, and then walked toward Tian Jia and the others.
She didn’t recognize the others, but she remembered Tian Jia. Knowing that the people Tian Jia brought must be looking for her, she brushed her hands together, dusted off her clothes, and approached.
"Nan Nan," Tian Jia greeted her warmly.
Lin Nannan nodded and asked, "Looking for me?"
"Yes, I’m Tian Jia’s teacher. My name is Xue He. We came specifically to see you," Xue He said. He didn’t underestimate Lin Nannan because of her youth but instead treated her as an equal, if not superior.
"Hello, Professor Xue!" Lin Nannan greeted him. "Would you like to talk at my place?"
"Of course!"
The villagers had long grown accustomed to strangers occasionally coming to look for Lu Hang or Lin Nannan, so no one paid much attention, saving them from unnecessary explanations.
When the Lu family saw Lin Nannan returning with Tian Jia and the others, they didn’t bat an eye. They simply brought water and stools, offering them a place to talk without interruption.
As soon as he sat down, Xue He couldn’t contain himself. He looked at Lin Nannan and asked, "I want to know—did you really teach Tian Jia and the others all this? Where did you learn it? Do you understand how revolutionary these things are for our country?"
The rapid-fire questions betrayed Xue He’s excitement.
In contrast, Lin Nannan remained calm.
She looked at the elderly man with salt-and-pepper temples and nodded slowly. "Yes, I taught them. Everything I know, I learned from my teacher. I’m also aware that our country is behind in development and has been at a disadvantage. That’s why, after learning about your research, I decided to pass this knowledge on to them."
Tian Jia looked alarmed at this and quickly explained, "Professor, we never mentioned anything!"
"Hahaha…" Xue He laughed heartily, reassuring Tian Jia. "Even if you didn’t say anything, she would’ve known. With your level of skill, what could you possibly hide?"
Tian Jia turned red with embarrassment…
"May I ask why you’ve come today…?" Lin Nannan asked tentatively, her mind still on the fieldwork.
"I’d like to invite you to work at the research institute. With your talents, you’re bound to achieve great things. Moreover, word of Tian Jia and the others coming to see you has gotten out. If the wrong people learn of your abilities, it could put you in danger. I hope you’ll leave with us now," Xue He said earnestly.
Lin Nannan knew he meant well. For most people in such a situation, this would be the natural course of action.
