Chapter 181

Gunshots in the Deep Mountains
A relationship takes two to move forward.
Previously, Lin Nannan had given more, and though Lu Hang saw it, he was willing but unable to reciprocate fully.
But now, after recovering, things had changed.
He had always felt both affection and guilt toward Lin Nannan and wanted to treat her even better. So, even before the Research Institute had made a final decision, Lu Hang stayed at home to accompany her. The couple went everywhere together, their closeness making countless people green with envy.
A few days later, when Lin Nannan noticed that Mr. Hu still hadn’t returned and she couldn’t reach him, she asked Lu Hang, “If Mr. Hu doesn’t come back, should I still plant the seeds?”
“The higher-ups are locked in a power struggle, and we don’t know when they’ll reach a decision. Let’s plant them first.” Familiar with such red tape, Lu Hang explained before shifting his gaze to the back mountains. “Those people over there need to be taken care of.”
Lin Nannan’s eyes lit up. “I’ll help you!”
Lu Hang chuckled at her restless enthusiasm but firmly replied, “No. You focus on farming.”
“Why?” she protested. “I can handle anything—I can help!”
“I know you’re capable, but if you get involved in this, you won’t be able to farm properly. Think carefully—do you really want to help?” he asked seriously.
Hearing this, Lin Nannan pursed her lips and dropped the insistence.
“Why?” she asked, confused.
“When you helped me at the train station, you got targeted. If you help me now, even more people will watch you, and you won’t be able to farm in peace.”
The fallout from the train station incident had left many unresolved issues. If not for outside help, they wouldn’t be enjoying this peace now.
But he didn’t mention that.
Lin Nannan pouted, knowing she couldn’t afford the gamble, and finally agreed to focus on farming.
“Once we deal with them, I’ll join you,” he promised.
“Okay!”
Their plan seemed solid. With the weapons Lin Nannan had crafted—far more effective than what Lu Hang had used before—she felt reassured, especially since he was taking A Da and others along. There shouldn’t be any problems.
So she took Lu Yuan to the fields. But just as they finished tilling the soil, staccato gunfire echoed from the mountains…
Lin Nannan straightened at the sound of the distant gunshots, staring into the distance, only to hear Lu Yuan ask in puzzlement, “Sis, what’s wrong?”
The question made Lin Nannan glance back at Lu Yuan, who showed no sign of alarm—only curiosity in her eyes. It was clear the distant gunfire hadn’t reached her ears.
Lin Nannan could hear it because of her lingering psychic awareness.
As the gunfire intensified, she frowned, unable to ignore it.
She’d barely managed to save Lu Hang—they hadn’t even started a family yet. He couldn’t afford to get hurt now.
“A Yuan, I just remembered—your brother’s health has improved, but he still needs a strengthening treatment. There’s an herb that’s best picked right now. I’ll go gather some and be back soon.” She offered a flimsy excuse.
Lu Yuan didn’t bat an eye. Having learned about herbal gathering, she knew timing was extremely time-sensitive for many plants. Trusting her sister-in-law’s expertise, she nodded. “Go ahead. I’ll wrap up here. We can start sowing tomorrow.”
“Good. If it’s too much, rope in Lu Ming!” Lin Nannan decided to rope in someone else last-minute.
“Will do!” Lu Yuan waved her off reassuringly.
