Chapter 184

Hidden Danger
Lin Nannan glanced at him and said, "The gunfire sounded wrong, so I figured you might need help. That’s why I came!"
"Thank you!" Lu Hang replied with heartfelt gratitude. "If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have made it out so smoothly today!"
There might’ve even been casualties…
Lin Nannan shot him a look and said, "Don’t mention it—sounds too formal between us. Have you asked who these people are?"
Lu Hang didn’t dwell on the thanks but shook his head. "Haven’t gotten around to it yet!"
"Do it now," she said. "I think these guys are different from the ones tailing you." She shared her hunch.
At first, Lu Hang wasn’t sure. He hadn’t made any enemies besides those others—and that feud had come out of thin air.
But after seeing how many men there were and their equipment, he sensed something was off too. The people targeting him wouldn’t have this much gear or be this bold. So he agreed with Lin Nannan.
Lu Hang made them all crouch down and started interrogating them…
These men feared death and all claimed ignorance. With their leader dead, they were just small-time players—playing dumb might save their skins.
But Lu Hang was no ordinary man. He hadn’t forgotten the skills he’d learned so quickly. Soon, he singled out someone dressed better than the rest and began questioning him.
Wang Hu, the deputy, looked like a beaten man. He hadn’t expected to be betrayed—not by his men, but by his own clothes.
Lu Hang’s interrogation was relatively mild, but Lin Nannan had little patience. She flat-out said she could pick them off one by one—there were plenty of bullets to spare, perfect for target practice…
Wang Hu recalled how this woman had silently taken out so many of his men from the shadows. He folded like a cheap suit, spilling his guts without a fight.
From Wang Hu, Lin Nannan and Lu Hang learned that these men had zeroed in here after spotting that high-tech wheelchair Lin Nannan used at the train station. Then, noticing weird activity around the Lu family’s backyard, they started gathering forces…
"Why did you gather here? What were you planning?" Lu Hang demanded, his voice icy.
With no escape and no will to suffer, Wang Hu confessed, "The boss wanted us to grab whoever built that wheelchair!"
"Then why didn’t you act?" Lu Hang frowned.
With such firepower, they could’ve easily done so.
Wang Hu sighed deeply. "We wanted to, but we couldn’t get into the village—couldn’t dig up any leads. Just as we were about to make our move, we noticed something strange about your backyard, especially with this woman coming and going. The two men around you acted way too respectful toward her. We were preparing to strike when you hit us first."
Wang Hu, who thought he'd been hiding flawlessly, had a ‘game over’ look on his face. Winners call the shots—no use crying over it now.
"How exactly were you planning to strike?" Lu Hang pressed.
Wang Hu didn’t hold back. "We were gonna hit them late at night in two days—snatch the woman you’re with…"
Lu Hang’s crew went stone-faced at that.
Armed, outnumbered, and striking at night? No prizes for guessing how that’d end.
They’d go in guns blazing, no care for casualties.
If not for today’s operation, even if Lu Hang had been home, he couldn’t have saved everyone. The Lu household would’ve been wiped out.
He drew a sharp breath, jaw clenched, his face grim.
"These people’s connections are likely formidable. The only regret is that our informant is dead, but we can’t drop the investigation. We need someone to take over!" Lin Nannan reminded Lu Hang, seeing he was brooding, so she wanted to give him something to focus on.
Lu Hang nodded. He kept his cool and told her, "You go back first. They can’t pass through the village, and the bodies need handling. It might take a while… If my parents ask, just say I have urgent business for a few days. Don’t mention what happened in the mountains!"
Lin Nannan nodded. Seeing no danger remained and that the three of them could manage, she agreed.
"Take this," she said, producing a concealed gun. "I modified these—they’re tuned for precision at range. Keep them for defense…"
Lu Hang eyed the weapon grimly. He had questions but bit them back for later.
Lin Nannan didn’t leave immediately either. Since Lu Hang and the others were injured—though not seriously—they still needed treatment.
She kept it simple, quickly gathering nearby herbs for them to crush and apply externally. As long as they didn’t develop a fever, they’d pull through.
Once Lu Hang and the others recognized the herbs, they let Lin Nannan return home.
After Lin Nannan left, Lu Hang sent A Da to find help while he and A Zhang stayed behind…
That day, when Lu Hang didn’t come back, Lin Nannan knew the prisoners had surely been moved.
When Zhang Xiaofeng asked about him, she used the agreed-upon cover story. Zhang Xiaofeng didn’t suspect anything—after all, Lu Hang was the steady one in her mind, and she trusted he wasn’t one to court trouble, so she didn’t press further.
Relieved that she had managed to keep the truth from the family, Lin Nannan still worried about Lu Hang.
She didn’t know whether the transfer went off without a hitch or who exactly was targeting them.
She knew this trouble could be traced back to her. If Lu Hang hadn’t decided to deal with those people in time, the consequences would have been… too horrible to contemplate.
The mere thought of that possibility sent a chill through her.
She was torn, feeling she shouldn’t stay here. But if she didn’t plant the crops, there would be no reason for her to stick around. So, no matter what, she couldn’t leave. The only solution was to fortify this place properly…
But that wasn’t something that could be solved with just a few words…
She racked her brain for ways to get this place on their radar, to have it fully protected so the Lu family wouldn’t suffer any harm.
Here, the Lu family meant everything to her, and she didn’t want them hurt—especially if the danger came from her, even unintentionally.
While Lin Nannan wrestled with these thoughts, she didn’t realize someone else was already losing it…
The materials Tian Jia and the others brought had been written by Lin Nannan and were now validated. This meant they could be developed further, highlighting her importance.
Knowing her abilities extended beyond this, the research institute had already filed for her reassignment.
Someone like her, left exposed like this, was in obvious danger. So, they all wanted to protect Lin Nannan first—other matters could be discussed later…
Even if Lin Nannan’s skills were limited to what she had already shown, she was still important enough to warrant protection. So, when Tian Jia and the others received orders to send people to protect Lin Nannan, they were floored.
They knew Lin Nannan was important—but not *that* important.
