Chapter 251
by 夏至三候Chapter 251
Getting an Earful
"If you don't follow through, I won’t let you into the mountains next time, and I’ll tell Grandma and the others," Lu Hang dropped his trump card.
His weakness was Lin Nannan—he had no hold over her, but Lin Nannan feared upsetting Grandma and the others, so the threat did the trick.
Sure enough, she shot him an unhappy glare before turning and walking away, leaving Lu Ming sighing but unmoved...
After they split up, Lin Nannan moved through the forest like she owned the place. The woods, seemingly without paths, only delighted her more.
Since her target was wild boars, she ignored the small animals peeking out or fleeing in panic and headed straight for the distance...
"One hour? Hmph, just encountering a boar would take longer than that..." Lin Nannan grumbled under her breath, then began tracking signs—skills she’d learned from the original host’s memories.
By a pond, she spotted two wild boars with several piglets, drinking happily, totally unaware.
She was figuring out how to catch all of them when she noticed Lu Hang approaching from another direction and immediately frowned—he was here to poach her prey.
She hadn’t hidden her presence, so Lu Hang saw her too.
He motioned for her to keep low to avoid scaring the boars away.
He had never intended to compete with her, so he didn’t care about losing. But Lin Nannan’s competitive streak ran deep—she wanted to prove herself against him. Lu Hang figured it might be better to get it over with this time to prevent her from constantly coming up with new challenges...
Since they had something to discuss, they moved closer and agreed to each take down one adult boar. As for the piglets, even if they fled in panic, they’d likely return since the adults were here. If not, they’d still be nearby. With the same plan in mind, they both moved toward their targets.
Their actions startled the birds resting in the trees and sent the drinking animals fleeing, but the two targets remained.
With two heavy thumps, they took down their respective boars almost simultaneously.
Lin Nannan had left the house prim and proper, but now she was covered in dust, her clothes torn, her face smudged—to any bystander, she’d look like a beggar. Oblivious, she proudly gloated to Lu Hang, who found it both amusing and exasperating.
"Yes, yes, you’re amazing. But you’re going to get scolded later!" He was almost smug.
Lin Nannan shot him a look. "Snitching because you lost? That’s hardly a fair win!"
Lu Hang found her accusation ridiculous and tapped her forehead. "Do you really think I’m that petty?"
"Then why snitch?" she retorted stubbornly.
"Look at your clothes. Mom made these for you—look what you’ve done to them!" He tugged at the tattered fabric and asked pointedly, "I won’t tell, but how do you plan to explain this?"
Lin Nannan stared at her shredded clothes, dumbstruck...
Seeing her finally speechless, Lu Hang checked the two boars to confirm they were dead before considering how to track the escaped piglets. Just then, Lin Nannan snapped out of it. Seeing him scouting the area, she knew his plan and immediately said, "I’m coming too!"
"Not afraid of getting scolded anymore?" he asked, turning back.
Lin Nannan pouted. "I am, but since it’s already like this, might as well have fun!"
Lu Hang was both amused and impressed by her attitude and reminded her, "If we find the piglets, it’s best to keep them alive. The village might raise them—could mean extra pork for the New Year feast!"
Not every household had meat as often as theirs. Many villagers went months without meat.
Lin Nannan was only in it to compete with Lu Hang. As for meat, ever since Lu Hang recovered and she started earning a salary, their family never lacked it—everyone knew she loved meat, and they had a share in the village’s livestock. So she didn’t refuse but worried instead about how to keep the piglets alive—a harder task than killing them.
The piglets, still small, had fled in terror but, drawn back by the quiet of the woods, soon came snuffling back—right into Lu Hang and Lin Nannan’s waiting hands.
If they couldn't kill them, then knock them unconscious and hogtie them.
There was too much for the two of them to carry alone, so in the end, Lu Hang stayed behind to guard the spoils while Lin Nannan went to call for help.
When she arrived, she explained the situation, and people immediately organized to assist. The group then transported everything straight to the village. The two large wild boars and the squealing piglets instantly drew a crowd of villagers. When the villagers learned that these had been hunted in the mountains and were a gift for the village, the spectators were stunned. Some children, upon hearing the news, jumped and cheered with excitement. The commotion grew so loud that even more people came to see what was happening.
Lin Nannan and Lu Hang stayed out of the spotlight—after all, doing this once was enough. If word got out, they’d never get a moment's peace if people kept expecting more.
Word of the commotion eventually reached the Lu family. At first, they didn’t know Lin Nannan and Lu Hang were involved, but when the two returned home with torn clothes and covered in dirt, the connection was clear.
Lin Nannan steeled herself for the scolding, while Lu Hang prepared to enjoy the show. To her surprise, however, it was Lu Hang who caught all the flak, leaving Lin Nannan utterly stunned.
"You can be reckless all you want, but dragging your wife along to hunt—and wild boars at that—have you lost your mind?" Zhang Xiaofeng was furious, tearing into him that left Lu Hang speechless.
But he couldn’t explain!
If he admitted he couldn’t even talk his own wife out of it, the scolding would only get worse. After all, this was a dangerous activity, and letting her participate would only anger his parents more. So, he kept his mouth shut.
Lin Nannan, who had been expecting the reprimand herself, couldn’t help but smirk at the sight, recalling Lu Hang’s earlier smugness. She bit back a laugh…
The couple had this odd dynamic—each seemed to take pleasure in the other’s misfortune. Lu Hang had anticipated everything except his mother’s reaction, and now he stood there, properly dressed down, barely able to lift his head.
By the time Zhang Xiaofeng had vented her frustration, her throat was dry, and she shooed the two back to their room, not wanting to look at them any longer.
Once inside, Lin Nannan burst into laughter, doubling over until she crouched on the floor, leaving Lu Hang utterly exasperated.
"Seeing me get scolded makes you that happy?" He couldn’t understand it.
Was he even her beloved husband anymore?
Where did his wife pick up this bizarre habit of enjoying his suffering?
Tears of laughter streamed down Lin Nannan’s face as she looked up at him. "Everyone always says you’re the pride of the Lu family, the golden child who never gets scolded. I just wanted to see what you’d look like getting yelled at—turns out, you’re no different from Lu Ming when it happens… Hahaha!"
