Chapter 287
by 夏至三候Chapter 287
Locking Horns
If Lin Nannan claimed second in troublemaking, no one dared claim first.
The superficial calm in Nanshi had everyone on edge, but she was the one to shatter it.
Out of nowhere, she learned that Zheng Jie had a mistress here, with whom he even had a son—one he openly flaunted in certain circles, emboldened by the fact that his wife and children in the capital were completely unaware.
Lin Nannan had learned about Zheng Jie’s marriage and children during a conversation between Lu Hang and Lin Kangnian about the Zheng family. This woman, kept in Nanshi as his unofficial wife, was living the high life without lifting a finger, living lavishly on his dime.
Lin Nannan couldn’t stomach her smugness. After one encounter, she caught the woman’s look of pure contempt directed at her. That instantly ignited her fury.
They had no prior feud, yet this woman dared to scorn her? Before Lin Nannan could even mock her, the woman had already targeted her. How could she let that slide? So, in front of a crowd, Lin Nannan bluntly exposed the woman’s shameful status and even went to Zheng Jie to boast about it.
"Mr. Zheng, this woman is outrageous—she claims to be your wife! I’ve never met your wife, but from what Mr. Lin mentioned, I know your actual wife is from the capital, definitely not her. Don’t let her deceive you!" Playing dumb, she laid bare their relationship and waited for Zheng Jie’s response.
Men’s infidelity was an open secret—tolerated as long as no one pointed them out. But Lin Nannan became the first to drag it into the light, humiliating them both.
Zheng Jie was livid. To make matters worse, his mistress burst into tears, throwing his life into disarray. Yet he had no way to retaliate against Lin Nannan—his own carelessness had brought this upon him, leaving him no outlet for his anger.
"What are you afraid of?" Liu Jinzhi, accustomed to throwing her weight around in Nanshi, glared at Zheng Jie with resentment. "In Nanshi, we call the shots. Why fear some upstart?"
"Shut up!" Zheng Jie snapped. "This isn’t your business. Don’t make things worse!"
"Not my business? Or is it because she’s young and you’ve taken a liking to her?" Liu Jinzhi challenged bitterly.
"Don’t talk nonsense!" Zheng Jie nearly laughed in frustration. "Nanshi’s a powder keg right now. If you dare stir up more trouble, don’t blame me for what happens next!"
Liu Jinzhi had been with Zheng Jie for over a decade. Pampered and coddled—especially since Zheng Jie couldn’t always be in Nanshi—she had grown bold. When she realized Zheng Jie wouldn’t avenge her humiliation, she hit the roof. Determined to reclaim her pride, she plotted revenge against Lin Nannan.
...
"What’s your plan?" Lu Hang asked, sensing there was more to Lin Nannan’s clash with Liu Jinzhi.
His wife wasn’t usually one to meddle in others’ affairs.
Seeing that he wasn’t scolding her but instead seemed certain she had an ulterior motive, Lin Nannan tilted her head curiously. "Aren’t you worried I’m just jealous of her cushy life?"
Lu Hang chuckled, tapping her nose lightly. "If you wanted luxury, would you even need to envy her? Have you forgotten the promises made to keep you in the capital?"
The researchers there would’ve gladly had her stay year-round—no request would’ve been too much. As for someone like Liu Jinzhi? Pfft. The idea that his wife would even spare her a second glance was laughable.
