Chapter 373

Gifts
When talking about the Lu family, Lin Nannan had so much to say that the military wives listened with envy.
"Your in-laws are wonderful, and so are you. Marrying Commander Lu when he was in that state back then took real courage—not something most people would dare to do!" one woman remarked, admitting she wouldn’t have been able to do it herself.
Plenty of others chimed in—they weren’t pretending; they genuinely couldn’t have done it.
"Did you ever regret it when Commander Lu hadn’t recovered yet?" Liu Xiaocui asked curiously.
Lin Nannan shook her head. "My in-laws treated me so well. The day after we married, they gave me land to do whatever I wanted. Before that, no one had ever been so kind to me. How could I possibly regret it?"
From just these words, everyone understood that Lin Nannan had had a tough childhood. The Lu family’s kindness made her unwilling to leave.
"Now that Commander Lu has recovered, things will only get better for you!"
"Exactly! That woman who was once engaged to him must be eating her heart out now!"
"Absolutely! Commander Lu has a bright future ahead. Only a fool would’ve turned him down!"
They took turns encouraging Lin Nannan while also dragging Lin Qingqing through the mud, who had once scorned Lu Hang. Lin Nannan found it both heartwarming and amusing, wondering if Lin Qingqing’s nose was tingling from all the talk behind her back...
The gossip that once surrounded her had now turned into praise and blessings, filling Lin Nannan with joy.
When Lu Hang returned to the compound, he was immediately bombarded with gifts from various households before he could even go upstairs. He had no idea who had sent what, so he just hauled it all upstairs.
"What’s all this?" he asked after setting the items down, turning to a dumbfounded Lin Nannan.
Staring at the pile of gifts, she murmured, "I already turned them down..."
Under Lu Hang’s questioning, Lin Nannan recounted the day’s events, and he finally understood what had happened.
"There’s so much stuff. Should we return them?" Lin Nannan asked.
Lu Hang: "I don’t even know who sent what. If we go door-to-door asking, they’ll definitely refuse to take them back."
"Then what should we do?"
"Don't sweat it. Let’s keep them for now. We’ll repay them in kind later," Lu Hang said, amused. It was the first time he’d ever received so many gifts, and he found it both novel and funny. He joked, "Looks like my wife’s way more popular than me. Nobody’s ever sent me presents before!"
Lin Nannan snorted. "Who says? Didn’t Jian Lingzhi send you something? And right under my nose too!"
Bringing up that sore subject made Lu Hang grimace. "Don’t twist things. She was just thanking us for saving her. Those were thank-you gifts for all of us."
"Yeah right, keep making excuses!" Lin Nannan grumbled, though her lips curled upward without a trace of anger.
Lu Hang let that comment slide and changed the subject. "What do you want for dinner?"
"I want meat sauce noodles. Everyone says they’re delicious!" she suggested.
"Alright. Go rest for a while. I’ll call you when it’s ready."
Lin Nannan refused. "I’m not busy. I’ll just sit here and keep you company."
Lu Hang didn’t argue. Instead, he brought over a chair for her to lean back on, even tucking a pillow behind her. The gesture made Lin Nannan feel like some delicate little thing that might break at the slightest touch.
As the aroma of meat sauce filled the air, she asked worriedly, "This is the best stuff they owned. What can we give them in return? Do you think there’s any meat in the package Grandma sent?"
"That’s yours to enjoy. We can’t use it to return gifts," Lu Hang said without looking up.
"So how do we return the favor?" she pressed.
