Chapter 322
by 夏至三候Chapter 322
Picking on the Weak but Cowering Before the Strong
When Liu Jinzhi mentioned preparing some items earlier, Lin Nannan didn’t think much of it, assuming it was just some food. It wasn’t until they were about to board the train that Liu Jinzhi handed it over, and with Xiao Bao throwing a tantrum, they truly had no idea what was inside.
Lu Hang placed the heavy bundle on the small table, and when they opened it, both of them were surprised by its contents.
Inside were items that were currently rare and expensive—things like baby formula, canned meat, not to mention milk candies and biscuits.
"There’s even meat!" Lu Hang unwrapped a cloth bundle, revealing several food containers. When touched, they were still warm.
As soon as the lids were opened, the rich aroma of meat filled the train compartment. Lin Nannan couldn’t help but lick her lips, feeling hungry despite having just eaten.
Lu Hang chuckled at her reaction and playfully bopped her nose. "You’re always so composed about everything else, but when it comes to food, you forget who you are."
Rubbing her slightly ticklish nose, Lin Nannan retorted with pride, "That’s not true! With regular food, I still know who I am."
"Hah!" Neither of them laughed, but a giggle came from the doorway. They turned to see two newcomers boarding—a young man and woman.
The pair entered, beaming at Lin Nannan, which made her flush a little.
"Where are you headed?" the girl asked cheerfully after setting down her belongings.
Lin Nannan immediately liked her and replied, "We’re going home. How about you?"
"My brother and I are visiting relatives," the girl said with a smile.
She was totally trusting, answering every question openly, much to the exasperation of the young man behind her. Unable to hold back, he knuckled the back of her head and said, "Jiang Xiaomeng, aren’t you afraid of being sold off?"
Rubbing her head, Jiang Xiaomeng turned to protest, "This jiejie isn’t bad!"
"Why don’t you think I’m a bad person?" Lin Nannan asked curiously.
"People who love food aren’t bad people!" she declared firmly.
The three in the compartment were left speechless by her logic.
Jiang Xiaopeng sighed, wanting to say something but ultimately choosing silence.
Amused, Lin Nannan teased, "What if I were a trafficker? If I kidnapped you, sold you, and used the money to buy food, would I still be a good person?"
Jiang Xiaomeng was stumped, blinking in shock as she fumbled for a reply.
"Yeah, would she still be a good person?" Jiang Xiaopeng added, seeing his naive sister at a loss for words for the first time.
Jiang Xiaomeng shrunk back a little. "But didn’t they say that after the recent crackdown, there are no traffickers at train stations anymore?"
"Crackdown?" Lin Nannan murmured in confusion.
Jiang Xiaomeng eagerly took over the conversation. "Yes! I heard a really beautiful woman boarded a train alone and got targeted by traffickers. Not only did she con them into buying her food, but she also beat them up so badly! And with ironclad evidence, they were arrested on the spot. Now, traffickers are too scared to operate at train stations—they’re afraid some innocent-looking woman might take down a bunch of men and wipe out their whole operation."
Why does this sound so familiar?
Lin Nannan thought to herself, then met Lu Hang’s side-eye. Suddenly recalling her own questionable exploits during her journey, she felt a wave of embarrassment and guilt...
"I’d love to meet that woman! She must be so badass and incredible..."
Lu Hang’s amused smirk was already making Lin Nannan’s skin crawl, and Jiang Xiaomeng’s starry-eyed admiration only made her fidget even harder.
Jiang Xiaomeng didn't notice Lin Nannan's discomfort, but Jiang Xiaopeng observed carefully, especially when his sister praised the female hero who took down the criminals. Lin Nannan kept changing the subject, clearly uncomfortable, which surprised him.
Being young, he couldn’t hide his surprise. When Lu Hang gave him a piercing look, he lowered his head and avoided eye contact.
After several failed attempts to divert the conversation, Lin Nannan was forced to sit through all the praise about herself until she became totally over it.
Finally, Lu Hang, amused by the situation, changed the topic, calming Jiang Xiaomeng, her starstruck fan.
The train moved forward slowly, and with Jiang Xiaomeng in the carriage, it was quite lively.
With the supplies Liu Jinzhi and the others had given them, they never lacked food or drinks until Jiang Xiaomeng and her brother had to disembark...
"Lin Sister, I don’t want to say goodbye!" Jiang Xiaomeng said reluctantly.
"Then come with me!" Lin Nannan replied seriously.
She really didn’t want to go, but she was too scared to stay, so Jiang Xiaomeng followed her brother off the train.
Lu Hang and Lin Nannan, continuing their journey, didn’t give it another thought, waiting for new passengers to board...
...
After the Jiang siblings left, they also disembarked at the next station to switch trains.
Wanting to buy some snacks, they followed the crowd but got caught in the rush of disembarking passengers before finally breaking free.
Ducking into a corner, they looked at the sea of people and exchanged a smile.
Just as they thought the crowd had thinned and prepared to leave, a group of quarreling people blocked their path...
"I told you to let me keep the money, but you refused. Now look—the pocket’s torn, and the money’s gone!" A young man was practically seeing red.
The young woman, acting entitled, retorted, "Stop yelling! We didn’t lose anything. They traded us for our sleeper berths and even bought us new ones. That money was theirs anyway!"
"A few dollars!" The young man raised his voice. "That was our sister’s money for the sleeper tickets to this station. They got off early, so it was compensation for us—our money! You idiot!"
Swapping train tickets to save cash was pretty normal, so Lu Hang and Lin Nannan didn’t think much of it. They just bought some snacks before boarding another train.
Along the way, they sometimes scored sleeper tickets, other times had to settle for hard seats. Under Lu Hang’s care, Lin Nannan adapted well without discomfort.
However, Lu Hang made sure Lin Nannan ate well, especially those creamy milk candies—their aroma alone was mouthwatering, let alone the taste.
Lin Nannan noticed something amusing and whispered to Lu Hang.
"Back when I was traveling alone to find you, people thought I was easy to bully. If I ate something, kids would fuss, and adults would use them as excuses to beg for food. If I refused, they’d curse me like I was the villain. Now, with you here, no one dares to eye these fragrant milk candies." The more she spoke, the funnier it seemed—people really do pick on the weak and steer clear of the strong.
