    Chapter 55

    It Might Work

Previously, when the family ran out of food, she had to go to the village head for help at night, using the family's money to buy supplies. She didn’t dare eat freely and hadn’t tasted meat for days.

Thinking about her current situation, she utterly despised Lin Nannan.

If it weren’t for that simpleton reporting to the military, none of this would have happened, and her father wouldn’t have been exposed.

Her father had said that after getting married and having her as a daughter, he no longer wanted to continue his old ways—he just wanted a peaceful life. But now, everything had turned out like this.

She loathed Lin Nannan but conveniently forgot that it was Han Li who had schemed against Lu Hang first. Lin Nannan had merely exposed it, leading to this outcome. Lin Nannan was just caught in the crossfire.

Faintly, she seemed to hear Lu Hang’s hearty laughter, and her eyes widened.

Ever since Lu Hang returned injured, she had pried into every detail, knowing full well that he would never recover. That was why she had given up on him.

So how could Lu Hang, who should be bedridden, be in the yard, laughing heartily?

Driven by curiosity, she crept to the corner of the wall to peek. Her backyard was close to the Lu family’s, and through a crack in the wall, she could see half of their yard.

Through the gap, she saw Lu Hang, whom she hadn’t seen in so long, sitting in a wheelchair with Lin Nannan standing beside him. She couldn’t hear what they were saying to Lu Ming, but the two of them were laughing uncontrollably. What infuriated Han Yan most was their intertwined hands, so glaringly obvious…

She and Lu Hang had grown up together, yet he had never been that intimate with her. Envy twisted inside her.

What did Lin Nannan, that fool, have that she didn’t? Why did Lu Hang and his family reject her so firmly, choosing Lin Nannan over her without hesitation?

Han Yan only ever saw things superficially and in ways that benefited her. She had long forgotten that the Lu family had rejected her precisely because He Ye was too meddlesome—gossipy and quarrelsome—and because Han Yan herself was too scheming. That was why they had flatly refused the match.

If He Ye hadn’t been like that, or if Han Yan had been simpler, things might have turned out differently.

But the Lu family despised gossips and troublemakers the most, and Han Yan was easily swayed by He Ye. That was why Zhang Xiaofeng had refused the marriage outright.

The bursts of laughter made Han Yan’s throat tighten with bitterness. Thinking of all the suffering she had endured, she wished she could confront Lin Nannan right then.

A shred of self-control held her back. She glared coldly at the laughing group, gritting her teeth. “Lin Nannan, Lu Hang… one day, I’ll make you repay me for all this.”

Unaware of Han Yan’s near-madness, the group eventually settled down. Lin Nannan helped Lu Hang back inside to prevent him from sitting too long, which wouldn’t be good for his health.

“You haven’t sat for this long in a while. We’ll take it slow and let you adjust. Today’s the first day—don’t overdo it,” Zhang Xiaofeng doted on Lu Hang like a baby, making him groan. Lin Nannan joined in, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

“Mom, I’m not three years old!” Lu Hang said wearily.

Zhang Xiaofeng snapped out of it and laughed awkwardly before falling silent.

She left the room, giving the young couple some space.

Lin Nannan helped Lu Hang into bed, adjusted everything for him, and then sat beside him. “So, how about it? From now on, you’ll come to the fields with me. Sound good?”

Lu Hang suddenly realized something and stared at her in disbelief. “Wait… did you get this wheelchair just to avoid turning me?”

“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to turn you—it was too time-consuming!” Lin Nannan replied bluntly.

Knowing she wasn’t rejecting him, Lu Hang felt no resentment. Instead, he asked curiously, “Haven’t you already planted everything you wanted to? Why are you still so busy?”

She was out from dawn till dusk every day. If not for the family confirming she was in the fields, he would’ve thought she was going somewhere else.

Lin Nannan naturally took his hand, rubbing his calloused palm. She pouted. “I’m doing comparisons. The way Mom and Dad plant is totally different. Mine are sprouting; theirs aren’t.”

Lu Hang glanced down at his hand, then quietly looked away, watching the little girl who was fussing with his big hand. He asked curiously, "Is there some special trick to this?"

He didn’t know much about farming.

In previous years when he returned home, he would help out in the fields when needed, but he just followed Grandma or his parents’ orders, never second-guessed how things were done. At most, he’d ask whether it was a good harvest year.

"Oh yeah, there’s tons to know," Lin Nannan said seriously. "The most important thing in farming is the seeds. Good seeds mean good harvests. I looked—our seeds aren’t that great!"

"No way!" Lu Hang exclaimed. "I’ve never heard Mom and Dad complain about poor harvests!"

"That’s because they’ve always assumed a good harvest year is just like this!" Lin Nannan pouted.

"So, what did you plant?" Lu Hang asked curiously.

Lin Nannan thought for a moment, then revealed a little. "I’m not entirely sure what I planted, but it’s obvious that mine are growing much better than Mom and Dad’s. When harvest time comes, it’ll blow their minds!"

Lu Hang knew Nan Nan wasn’t one to exaggerate, so if she said it, it must be true.

    "Are you sure?"

Lin Nannan hesitated slightly, considering the stark difference between the two plots. "It should work out, right?"

Lu Hang laughed at how she said it. "If you’re not certain, don’t say anything. Let them find out on their own. If anyone asks, just say I told you to plant these seeds. Understand?"

The wheelchair could be kept a secret, but the crops couldn’t. Any decent farmer would spot the difference soon enough, so he needed to get ahead of it to ensure no one suspected Nan Nan.

If he were healthy, he could protect her without issue.

But now that he was paralyzed, and in others’ eyes, Nan Nan was a helpless fool with no backup, folks would jump at the chance to push her around. So, he had to draw all the attention to himself—any trouble, he would bear it.

Lin Nannan was simple-minded, but not foolish. She knew he was doing this for her sake.

In her past life, she had been young but possessed extraordinary mental strength. As one of the last children born, she’d been spoiled rotten by everyone. The reason she was chosen in the end was precisely because of her formidable mental abilities—otherwise, she would have lived a life of bliss.

Well, the only downside was the lack of naturally grown food.

What Lin Nannan loved about this place was the abundance of delicious food.

Honestly, as long as it was edible, Lin Nannan found it tasty—she wasn’t picky at all.
